People have kind of gotten off the "netflix instant" track with this thread. Let me see if I can make some good suggestion that are on Instant, and good for boys that are pre-teen: Hunt for Red October: PG movie about nuclear submarines. Instense scenes without being a bloody war film. I loved it when i was 12. Back it up by playing something like Risk or Axis & Allies as a family together (Risk Legacy is an amazing experience, btw). The Italian Job: PG-13 heist flick. It's fun, moves at a good pace, and has an excellent chase scene at the end. Stardust: You say they like Princess Bride? Then give this one a shot. It's equally charming. Hellboy: This one is an absurd amount of fun, comic book based, and doesn't contain any material that will make you feel uncomfortable. Ron Pearlman is excellent in it, especially when beating up Nazis. Emperor's New Grove: Yea, it's animated. It's also hysterical. Labyrinth: You asked what we loved as kids. You can't go wrong with Jim Henson exploring his darker side. Hugo: An orphan boy with a knack for clockworking grows up in a train station. A fun, beautiful love letter to the dawn of cinema. Everyone will get something out of this one. Crocodile Dundee: I can't imagine my childhood without having seen this one. Something about an Australian outback stereotype running around New York that works. Last Action Hero: An awesome send-up of 80s action movies. Arnold being awesome, with a kid protagonist your own may identify with. D.A.R.Y.L.: One of the underrated kid movies of the 80s, IMO. Another child protagonist, but you know, not quite... Karate Kid: All three are up on Instant. Still great stuff. More on reddit.com
