r/GoogleTagManager on Reddit: Difference between google tags on analytics/ads/tag manager
June 20, 2024 -

Hi everyone - It’s been years since I was involved with doing anything with Google Analytics, and my job has changed so that I need to start tinkering again. However it’s changed so much, and I had a few basic questions that i haven’t been able to find out online that I was hoping some kind folks could answer.

We have website, which is a third party platform that has an option to add both a google tag manager id and analytics id. Ultimately we want to track user beheaviour in analytics and we are also using google ads, so we want to track conversions in there based on events, which the website provides via a data layer for google tag manager.

It’s my first time using GA4 and to embed it on the website it gives me a google tag such as below (ID’s for illustrative purposes):

<script async src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=G-RQ02SCXQY0"></script>

I’m confused as I had set up a google tag manager account separately, so now I have a google tag here (G-RQ02SCXQY0), and google tag manager account that is separate with a separate ID, and a website asking for either or both.

So given i also want to connect google ads, should i be adding both to the website, and how does the relationship between all these tags work? I am guessing the google tag manager is a platform to manage tags such as the one created by GA4 here, but I am confused how i should be having them work together or if i should at all.

Thanks

How do I get my tagmanager into google ads option "use existing tag"? Is there some linking I have to do between these two accounts?

Is this a sensible Google Tag Manager setup for Google Ads and Google Analytics?

Yes, typically, you would deploy and manage everything through Google Tag Manager:

  • GA4 configuration

  • Conversion linker for Google Ads

  • Any events (for both GA4 and Google Ads)

It seems like you are on the right track. 🙂

Difference between google tags on analytics/ads/tag manager
Hello there, My advice would be to set up Google Tag Manager and then manage the GA4 (and Google Ads) connection through that, except if you have something very specific why that wouldn't work. Implement GTM onto your site, then setup the GA4 config tag within your GTM contatiner and then set up the pageview event tag within GTM as well and you start have a basic start from there. With Google Tag Manager you can also manage all other scripts, like the Facebook Pixel, Linkined Insights Tag, Microsoft Bing Tag etc. The data would go like: Website > GTM > Platform That way, you have set up one script for GTM on your website, but can manage all other possible pixels/tag/scripts within your GTM container, making you less dependent on development and giving you quite an easy interface. Google Ads Tag Manager

Not entirely sure what you mean, but as far as I see i would go about it like this:

  • Create a page_view trigger

  • Make the trigger fire when you can on a specific pagepath

  • Use the correct thank-you pagepath ex: yourwebsite/thank-you

Connect the trigger to your Google Ads tag :-)

Hope it helps

r/GoogleTagManager on Reddit: How do I get my tagmanager into google ads option "use existing tag"? Is there some linking I have to do between these two accounts?
March 6, 2025 -

Hi all!

I want to set up purchase conversion in google ads. I have it set up in tag manager. It works with analytics.

When in google ads I try to create a new conversion, I have to use option "scan website" and it says it "couldnt find any tag" and asks me to create a new tag and gives code for that. Well, I have language redirect, maybe here google then fails. No biggie as I have tagmanager and specific tag for purchases.

So I use the "use existing tag", but it only gives me Google Analytics containers.

Here is a screenshot of that: https://ibb.co/N2T2pYgC

Surely there has to be a way to get my tags here. But what is the way to do it, some settings I have to change? Linking accounts somewhere?
