Good question. It made me think for a while. Here is what I came up with: I think that extensions have great monetization potential, mostly because they run on the desktop browser environment where many people DO WORK. This makes your potential audience's problems their WORK problems, which they are willing to pay for if it looks like a good deal in terms of money or time equivalent of money return. The only problem I see right now is that there are millions of people who work online on their desktops, and they don't know of such a thing as the Chrome Web Store. I think that this community and Chrome developers should improve on this. I started my website about Chrome extensions as my contribution to this: cws-database.com Of course, this does not relate to extensions made for entertainment purposes; in my opinion, this is not the right market for such products. TL;DR: If something saves you more money or time equivalent of money than it costs - it's a good deal. As for the interview, I think the speaker wanted to point out that the extensions market is not saturated despite it's being old. More on reddit.com

Thanks; these look great. I hadn't heard of Workona before... it looks supremely powerful, turning Chrome into a project management tool in itself, which is more poignant than ever, given how many web-based apps are used in various productivity scenarios.

I recently listened to the Lex Fridman podcast where he interviewed a guy named Peter Levels who founded several succesful SaaS businesses. At some point he says that people are not willing to pay for extensions because they don't see them as "complete products" and therefore not worth the price.
To me this sounds a bit strange because it obviously depends on what the extension does, some extension provide great value to users.
Is it true that extensions are more difficult to monetize compared to webapps according to your experience?

Nonsense. I’ve built any number of $1M+ browser extensions where the extension is the core product. 2 of 3 were entirely extensions with basically no web application component. If the pain is high enough and the value is high enough that’s the only thing that matters. People who say you can’t make money on extensions cause people perceive them as “not full products” make me lol because that’s literally just their completely uneducated opinion. PS here are a few companies on track for or exceeding $100M in valuation for businesses in which the core product is delivered VIA A BROWSER EXTENSION: Kixie, DialPad, Lavendar, and oh yeah HONEY! There’s tons more those are just off the top of my head. This is to say most people are aware of browser extension businesses that are successful… they just don’t perceive them as “extensions” since they market themselves as a solution to a problem rather than as a browser extension.
