How the heck are you supposed to order a new SIM on mobile? In the app if I go to shop it just gives me a limited list of devices to buy. If I go to the website in Chrome and tap "sign in" it just opens the shop tab in the Fi app. As far as I can tell there is no way to order a new SIM on mobile.

For those that have devices that only use physical SIM cards, be aware that obtaining a replacement is difficult. You cannot find them at local retailers anymore. Google Fi support will tell you that you can purchase them at Best Buy, Target, Walmart stores; or Amazon. All of their websites are either sold out or do not show that the cards are available either.

Ordering direct from Google Fi can take a week or more and tracking details are limited.

Good Luck!

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: How Do I order a Data SIM for a Tablet?
January 16, 2024 -

I want to buy a tablet that has a SIM (Amazon link) It's not verified that it works, I can always return it, so I want to order the SIM so I have it ready to test the tablet.

My main problem is, I can't figure out how to get the SIM.

I go to "Shop" and at the bottom is Get a Fi SIM. That prompts for "Order a free SIM" but mentions switching phones. I'm keeping my phone, the tablet will not be logged in to my main account. I created a Tablet@Gmail account, so do I select "Add a Member"? That then asks about the phone when I say they are bringing their own device. There are no tablet options listed. There is a brand "none" and "Phone1" option, which would get me a SIM, but I'm not sure this is the correct way to get a data only SIM for a tablet.

Solved: I need to upgrade plans to get the data only SIM.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: No option to order a SIM card when signing up
January 21, 2021 -

I just signed up for GoogleFi and ordered a new phone, but after I placed the order I noticed in the FAQ that I should have had an option to request a free SIM card when ordering: https://support.google.com/fi/answer/6224695?hl=en#zippy=%2Corder-a-google-fi-sim-kit

If I click the link in that FAQ to order a card, it just takes me to my account page, but I don't see a separate option to order the free card. Does anyone know how I can do that since I've already gone through the sign-up process?

EDIT: I should note, I did buy a new phone during the signup process, if that matters at all.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Switching to fi with new phone order questions pls help
February 9, 2024 -

Hey all! This may be a dumb question but I'd really appreciate any help or even a step by step walkthru for this! So, I've been with at&t for almost my whole life but a pixel owner since p2! My girlfriend and I are both on an at&t plan but it's just becoming far too expensive. So I took advantage of the current Google store sale to get a monthly fi bill credit when you buy a new pixel 9 because we had been wanting to switch to Fi anyways. So when I purchased the phone last night I had to select "with google fi" rather than "unlocked". In order to receive the bill credit, I need to activate the phone on Fi within 30 days of shipping. My gf will be transferring her pixel 6 to the new fi account with me, my questions are as follows.

•Will the new phone ship with a SIM card? And if not how do I activate the phone on Fi? I've heard that I need to prep at&t to port our phone numbers because we would like to keep them the same.

•How do I receive my gfs new SIM?

•How quickly does activation take for service to kick in? I won't receive the p9 until mid September so I'm not going to set up Fi service now, but can it be same day activated? Will I need the SIM immediately, and again will they send it with the phone automatically?

Sorry if these are all silly questions I haven't had to switch service providers ever I don't think so I'm a little ignorant to this and help and clear steps of direction will be greatly appreciated!!!

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Why do no stores sell sim cards
November 26, 2023 -

The sim card in my phone is on the fritz. It has been disconnecting several times a day, and each time it takes 15 minutes up to get it to work again.

When I talked to support they said I should replace the sim card, that it is free from them or a credit if I buy it from a store, but not a single store in my area sells them. Target doesn't even have it on their website, Best Buy is online only, amazon doesn't have it. Is there a secret store I am missing? I have looked online and have found no other options, and ordering it from google fi will take a week.

I’ve had GoogleFi for 8 days using an e-sim and have had no issues. Today a GoogleFi SIM card showed up to my door and through 20 minutes of google and Reddit searches, I have no idea what the pros/cons of putting it into my phone (iPhone 12 pro) will do. Can anyone tell me what the physical SIM card does?

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: How to activate a data only SIM
June 1, 2025 -

I ordered a data only SIM from Google Fi.

I've tried to activate a data only SIM in a Pixel 6 and it keeps asking me to transfer my number from my voice phone (Pixel 9a) to the Pixel 6. When I choose "move number later" or "skip" at the different screens, the Google Fi application closes.

I don't have a tablet to activate the data SIM and I don't want to use an eSIM on the Pixel 6 as I'm trying to get the data SIM activated.

If you go to fi.google.com/data it wants you to enter in your "secret code" on the front of the SIM card packaging. The code on the front of my sim data card has two group of 4 numbers separated by a dash and then a word. My word is PEACHES. The grey box does not allow you to enter in numbers. Only letters. When I enter in PEACHES, it says it's incorrect.

I spent 45 mins on the phone with Google Fi support and they were no use.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Do you need a Google fi sim card or not?
July 3, 2017 -

Do I need a Google fi sim if I am trying to activate a one plus 6 on Fi? The website only say an active Sim card:

Use your own phone with Google Fi

Most popular phones are compatible with Fi. You can bring one of the phones below to Google Fi.

If you’re a new to Fi, sign up at fi.google.com/signup.

To get started, download the Google Fi app on your new phone at fi.google.com/app.

If you already have an active SIM card, you don't need a new one for most phones. If you don’t have an active SIM card, order one for free at fi.google.com/ordersim.

Does this mean an active FI sim? Or any active sim???

Thanks

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Google FI SIM card failed, can not find a local replacement to keep my phone working
March 5, 2024 -

Sure, I can wait a few days, but I am out a phone in the meantime.

I replaced the wife's Samsung Galaxy A14 recently under warranty through Google Fi. This phone is not eSIM compatible. The new phone came with a new SIM. It just failed this week. Google Fi support said that I could order a replacement, so I did. So now I get to wait 3-5 business days. I asked about buying a physical SIM locally, and I was assured by Fi support that they were available locally in Best Buy and Target stores.

Cool, I live not too far from Target. Went there, no fi SIM cards anymore. They sent me to another Target farther away, and still no Fi SIM cards. They were just missing. I decided to try a Best Buy that is kinda far from where I live. I was relieved to see them on the shelf. When I tried to buy one, they said they were "recalled by Google" and could not sell me one.

I guess if Google wants to recall their physical SIMs, that is their prerogative. Don't have your service reps send me to stores to look for them if you recalled them. And let us know what is going on, please!

So, I am trying the Mint Mobile 7-day trial to get phone service while I am waiting for the physical SIM. Let's hope I don't decide to just switch to Mint mobile...

As to why they send it with the sim, that's probably just part of the order flow... I believe one of my earlier Fi phones was shipped with the sim in place already. I honestly don't think it matters much, I would probably just use the phone as-is with the sim as it's working, then if it stops working simply re-activate on the e-sim... If you are sure you phone supports e-sim, you risk almost zero down-time. ... I have the new sim card from Google Fi now.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Fi SIM card outage MAY 2024
May 20, 2023 -

Hello! I have the dreaded "no SIM - Emergency calls only" issue on my phone.

I'm not seeking answers; I've been told by several helpdesk employees that this is a known issue, that Google has a team working on it, and to please be patient. And also, my phone does not support eSIM so that's not an option for me.

I'm here because a helpdesk guy told me on the phone that this outage started May 1st, but I haven't been able to find anyone else hit by it. There are no updates to my ticket from the engineering team, and I'm just curious what the heck is going on. I thought maybe if I can find other users we could compare notes.

So comment if you have suddenly lost service to your Google Fi SIM card in the last 3 weeks. Here's my info--

One Plus 10 5G SIM card installed Feb 2024 Outage began Friday May 10 around 5pm CDT
