I want to throw a Halloween party for my toddler and friends (age 2-5). I was considering waiting a few years because toddlers might be too scared… but it’s hard waiting… I love Halloween so much and my toddler is old enough to actually have friends this year. What do yall think, too scary? I would only do cute or not gruesome/overly spooky decor. I thought they would have fun with a black light party with glow in the dark stuff. I would have them paint mini pumpkins, pin the spider on the web, mummy wrap with tp, and setup an indoor bounce house. Any other ideas for Halloween fun that a toddler can manage? What about ideas to keep the parents entertained too?

Edit: had this party and it was a blast for all. I did follow advice from the comments here and made a separate room for black light so kids could take a break from it as they pleased. They also liked going in/out of the two rooms. I wasn’t sure if they’d be scared of the black light room but they all loved it. In the black light room I had: coloring with highlighters, glow ring toss, glow magnetic tiles, glow car track, and a toy called Johnny skull. In the lighted room: pumpkin painting, Halloween books, and coloring. Really glad I got to throw the Halloween bash of my dreams lol

August 18, 2021 - We're on a budget this year, too, so lots of DIY decorations like Halloween picture collages (could be something not frightening like pumpkins, black cats, fairies etc) and a slideshow with Halloween pics and some spooky music that will be played as the background tune. I'll also use led string lights that we usually have for Christmas but there will be pumpkin stickers on them. September 4, 2025 - Keep little hands busy with some free Peppa Pig Halloween colouring sheets from penguin.co.uk. They’ll have a brilliant time colouring in Peppa and George! Colouring is a good way to calm excited children before they eat their party food or to settle them down before they go home. Slime is a fun sensory play activity for kids – and you can make it extra spooky by adding a scattering of googly eyes! Don’t use the eyes if you’re giving the slime to toddlers, as it’s a choking hazard.

My 4.5 year old son is in pre-k. He wants to have a Halloween party. Issue is our house is tiny. Very tiny. Sending invites through the school, we have to invite the whole class (20 kids) and usually they want to bring their siblings. Then parents. So I was thinking of having it at a local park. The issue is we are in Florida where it will be HOT. looking for ideas for his party. He loves Ghostbusters but other kids don't so looking to do something with just us for his Ghostbuster love.

Do you have a local VFW in your area? You can usually rent their space for a reasonable cost. Plus, they have bathrooms on-site.

I was a kindergarten teacher and this is what I used to set up for Halloween parties Ghost Bowling-Make ghosts out of old containers (I used to used pringles cans) by wrapping them in white construction paper and drawing on spooky faces. Trick or Treat Baskets- I’d have a couple of trick or treats pails set up with different points. Then I would give small basketballs/beanbags/crumpled up orange paper and have them toss it into the pails. If they got more then ten points, they’d get a piece of candy. Trick or Treat Trail- Kinda like an Easter egg hunt, I would buy plastic pumpkin favor boxes from the dollar store and put candy in them. I’d hide them around the room and let kids who weren’t interested in games search for them. There’s all kinds of other games you can set up like a spooky dance party area, a costume/dress up area, and pumpkin painting! I used to buy tiny pumpkins for my students to paint with acrylics. It dried fast and they loved it! Also, might sound a bit weird, but the favorite game at these parties was Mummy Wrap! It’s actual an OT exercise to build strength and dexterity, but what you do is take some thick paper towel (like the brown industrial kind) and wrap a child in it like a mummy. The child then has to “break out” of the mummy wraps by ripping them apart. I used to use a pumpkin timer to show kids how fast it took them to break out. So messy, but so fun! We actually ended up doing it a Christmas party because the class begged to have it as a station. We did use cheap dollar store wrapping paper for that and it worked just as well.

August 9, 2021 - When mine were that age we made Halloween biscuits (I had a spider cookie cutter) and decorated them with icing and sprinkles (2/3 year olds can help with rolling and cutting dough but for a party I'd make the biscuits and advance and just get them to decorate as otherwise it'll take too long). I also made gingerbread men and decorated them to look like skeletons (ish!). Pumpkin faces to decorate (either use small pumpkins or cut out some pumpkin shapes on orange card / sugar paper with an assortment of cut out eyes / mouths to go with).

r/Preschoolers on Reddit: Halloween gathering/party for 4 year olds
May 14, 2024 -

Hi, I'm thinking of throwing a very small party (like max 8 kids) for my Halloween obsessed twins and I'm looking for tips. I've never thrown any kind of party before.

What I need tips on is timings. I'm thinking of making it around 2 hours long? I want to include a couple of games (variations of pass the parcel, musical statues and pin the hat on the witch or something). A little craft (nothing messy). Time to eat some party food and then a little mini disco.

My main question is, what order would you do these things? Will 4 year olds have more trouble focusing on a craft or games right at the beginning or right at the end? Do parents tend to stay? Will they usually help out? Do I need to provide food for them too or maybe just tea and biscuits? I'm nervous of having so many kids in my tiny house... how can I make sure things run smoothly?

Thank you!

Edit: Just to add I'm in the UK, if that changes anything in regards to etiquette

Two hours max for kids this age. Parents stay. Feed the kids a “meal” (often pizza). If it’s not during a meal time you can feed the adults snacky things but I always serve the adults something. Instead of dedicated times for activities I would try to do zones that they can explore on their own; their adult will probably stick with them. Like over here is the craft table, here is the dance area. For games you can try to keep them organized and together but it may be difficult. Last time we had a party at our house, the kids were excited just to play with toys that were new to them. I had cars set up in one corner, Duplo put in another, picassotiles somewhere else. Put away anything you don’t want kids to touch in a room that’s off limits. Make it clear in your invitation if you’re allowing siblings to come.

I'd do more unstructured time; craft zone instead of craft time. Have the craft setup on one table, the pin the hat on another wall, some toys/sensory box/ whatever zones setup. Kids arrive, let them play for a bit. Gather everyone for pass the parcel then food if you want to serve something formal, back to free play till time to go. Food, if you have the party not over a meal, I'd say just snacks is fine. But if it's over lunch or dinner a bigger meal is expected. Consider that families may bring siblings. You can specify they aren't invited (kindly) on the invite, but that might mean the invited kid can't come if the parents don't have a sitter. Also consider what date you run it. Where I am there's several Halloween events, truck or treats or town parties. Attendance might be poor if you run it the same day as some other big event
