r/Hamilton on Reddit: Looking for recommendations for record store with good selection of metal & rock albums
February 12, 2022 -

Hi folks. I just got my first record player up and running recently. I have a nice little collection so far, but am looking to expand my collection of metal and rock albums a little bit.

I'm looking for vinyl from artists like: Ghost, Powerwolf, Nightwish, Metallica, Rammstein, Tool, and Greta Van Fleet.

The closest place to me is Into the Abyss on Locke, and I appreciate that they have their own website with a browsable inventory. I fully plan on picking up a couple records there since they have good selection from other genres, but since I'm completely new to this scene, I don't know where I should start looking for the kind of music listed above.

Appreciate any advice!

r/Hamilton on Reddit: What stores have good selections of hiphop vinyls?
November 25, 2024 -

Just got a record player & I'm trying to find the best shop for hiphop/rap records specifically. I live right beside Ottawa St so I'm aware of the shops there but their rap selections haven't blown me away. I'm curious if there's any small shops in another area in Hamilton that might have some good finds?

r/Hamilton on Reddit: Record shops
June 11, 2025 -

I’ve recently inherited a massive record collection and I’m in need of a player. Trying to research online is overwhelming so I was looking to talk to someone at a local shop. I live near Ottawa so Im wondering if anyone can recommend a record shop nearby that could give me some guidance?

If you search the sub, you'd find your answer pretty easily, but since this topic is close to my heart, here goes: Closest to you is Revolution Records. They carry some used equipment and maybe occasionally some new stuff as well, but it's not their main focus and stock is limited. Into the abyss on King often has what they call the "Starter kit" which is an AT-LP60 and some Edifier book shelf speakers and this is an excellent set up for someone just getting into it or only occasionally listening to records. Again stock is limited and not always available. DR Disc at Canon and James has the widest selection of turn tables available but they specialize in more Dr quality stuff and it can get expensive really quick. They also carry the entry Audio Technica turntables (my AT-LP120, which they sell, has been going strong and meeting my needs for years.) Audio Technics turns tables are good starting points and can be found at a lot of big box stores as well, but why not shop local! If you can afford it, I really, strongly recommend you avoid the 'suit case' players and the 'all in one' set ups with built in speakers. If this is something you are going to use as a novelty once or twice a year, then those might be better for you, but they sound bad for the most part and are often cheaply made, difficult to repair, and you can't adjust certain things like tracking and anti-skate like a regular player that will help you get the best experience. Also congrats on the collection you inherited. I don't know what is in it but I am very very jealous.

Looking to sell a bunch of records (from 1970s-80s). Advice on an honest buyer around Hamilton?

[Addition to original post:]

I've had an amazing overwhelming interest in my collection! Apologies to those I haven't replied to. I will reach out to more people in the next couple weeks to see if there's still interest in whatever I have left as people go through them.

I received a very generous Christmas gift from a friend - a simple record player! Music has always been important to me but I was an early adopter of the MP3 player and haven't bought anything physical in half my life. I didn't think I wanted one, but now I am kind of excited about it. Enough about me.

Where do you buy your used records?
