Correct z bar flashing for hardie board and batten?
u/mhcolca I am trying to do whats in this image: https://imgur.com/aNso2fY From the Hardie guidance, it looks like the flashing needs to go under the panel. Below the flashing Z, the trim is covered from the top, but the trim goes over the panel, hence the measurements. Is this not how its done? If I butted up the panel to the trim, the measurements would work out better, but the waterproofing would fail. More on reddit.com
Board and Batten: Hardie Plank lap vs. 4x10 sheets
Thanks for the bump brad900 but my build does not match the OP's process. I used 12 foot X 12 inch panels because I wanted a true "board and batten" finish....all be it HardiPlank rather than cedar. I never looked into the 12 X 8 size because I did not like the look that the panels gave. More on garagejournal.com
Best product for board/batten siding: LP, TruWood, or Hardie?
I prefer hardie. I left a couple pieces laying soaking on my deck over a Canadian winter and then put them back on the house in the spring. A little fragile at first, but now I can't tell which ones they were. Dust is an issue, and installation is big since you can put up full sheets with fewer breaks in the siding. Get a nibbler if dust is a big concern. More on reddit.com

James Hardie Board and Batten Siding: Product, Cost & Comparison
October 1, 2025 - Board and batten is a vertical siding style where wide boards are installed side by side and narrow battens are placed over the seams. It creates a strong visual pattern and adds dimension to exterior walls. It’s often used on entire homes or as an accent on gables, dormers, or entryways. James Hardie’s version of board and batten siding is built with fiber cement, combining cement, cellulose fibers, sand, and water to create a long-lasting material that resists moisture and wear.

r/Homebuilding on Reddit: Correct z bar flashing for hardie board and batten?
July 8, 2023 -
I am trying to figure out the correct dimensions for a board-and-batten install, to get the appropriate z bar flashing. The panel thickness measures 5/16" and the hardie trim boards measures either 1.0" or 0.75". This gives an overall thickness of either 1-1/6 or 1-5/16 respectivly. Problem is, it looks like the z bar flashing comes in either 1 or 1-1/2" flavors. In all the pictures I have seen of the install, the bottom part of the flashing is flush to the trim pieces, but at these measurements, there are gaps.
Am I missing something? Are the z-bar flashings custom or somthing?

For the vertical panels, we flashed the horizontal panel joints using standard z-bar and ran the battens over the flashing. For the trim at the windows we had our guy do custom z-flashing.
