With all brands of vinyl planks/tiles, you never want to leave standing water on them. Water can still go through the locking seams and pool under the planks, leading to mold or even subfloor damage. Make sure everyone who lives there dries off in the shower/tub before stepping on the floor. If you can't get everyone to do that, or you have kids who like to splash water on the floor, tile or sheet vinyl is a better option. The good thing about vinyl plank flooring is that if it does get soaked, you can take it apart, dry the floor and planks, and reinstall them. More on reddit.com

Okay so I’ve helped plenty of customers just like you! I guarantee your husband is a little older and lived through the days were laminate was peaking everywhere and basically blowing up off the floor. I’ll also say your “installer” is older than your husband & Neither of them embrace change easily. Not a drawback, it takes one to know one. However your husband does have a point. They are cheaper than traditional engineered wood and definitely cheaper than solid wood. There’s a reason why every major builder track has removed engineered wood from there lineup and in its place added laminates and lvp’s. It’s because exactly what you stated. They scratch easily and they also dent easily. New age laminate like any of Mohawks revwood or quickstep exceeds anything your husband has probably ever seen. Laminate has now taken over sheet vinyl for the lowest claims ratio in all flooring categories and that is nationwide. They have either a waterproof warranty that carries warranties for everything up to high heat steam mops no limit on the time to clean up a spill to water resistant products that have only a 24 hour spill cleanup time before the water penetrates the bevel. You see laminate itself is waterproof. Just like a piece of laminated paper is waterproof. What isn’t waterproof is the core or the back of the product. So if water penetrates the locking system or gets under the product you will have a problem. The issue lies with the installer creating a waterproof installation. This involves using a closed cell polyethylene or similar padding under the laminate to prevent humid from the slab of over concrete from getting into the product. It also requires sealing the edges. This can be done simply by placing a foam backer rod in the expansion joint around the edge of the installation and sealing with silicone or I’ve seen new products that have a built in gasket in the quarter round that prevent water seepage at the edges. Although this second step should really only be used in areas that see a lot of water. I think your installer wants more money. Has he tried to show you or push you to the engineered wood/solid wood? If so this may also be just because they are comforting installing that type of product. Although in reality a laminate or LVP installation is much easier and generally less expensive.
