How to Install a DIY Board and Batten Wall
June 18, 2024 - Because the over-drywall method doesn't rely on the width of actual board seams for batten placement, you can really place them wherever. While placing 1x3 battens on 10- to 12-inch centers will yield the most traditional board and batten look, playing with the spacing can yield a better look that's more tailored to your space.

How to Make a Board and Batten Wall Accent - The Home Depot
September 30, 2024 - If your miter joints aren’t perfect, common with crooked walls and older homes, just apply caulk and spackle to fix any mistakes. You can also make your wall textures smoother for board and batten wall spacing. Attach a 1/8-inch panel board, like plywood, cut to size, on the wall.

Easy Board & Batten Tutorial | Young House Love
May 29, 2024 - The 1 x 6″ provides the perfect bottom rail for our board and batten, so we just needed to remove the decorative piece so our battens could sit flush against it. After scoring the top edge with a utility knife (you can also use the sharp corner of a spackle knife or painter’s tool) we pried off the small decorative piece on top. The scoring is helpful to minimize damage to the drywall behind it.

DIY Board and Batten Installation: Tips & Nail Guide
You will need a chair rail at the top to secure the boards in place. Since it is horizontal, it can be nailed into the studs. Typically, this is a 3-inch wide board with a 2-inch or 2.5-inch shelf on top.

DIY Board and Batten Wall – Love & Renovations
But, you would notice if there were weird spaces left at the end of walls or battens that are cut off by electrical outlets! Once you’re fully planned out, it’s time to start installation! I started with a horizontal ledger board going across the bottom of my wall. This isn’t a required step at all, but since the garage doesn’t have an existing baseboard this helped things feel a little more polished. It also prevented me from having to worry about the bottom of the drywall not being straight – I just made sure the ledger board was level and then I could rest all of the battens on top of this.

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: How do I mount boards to drywall without studs?
December 3, 2022 -
I want to attach a few boards to my mudroom wall as per the picture in the link, but I don’t have studs where the vertical pieces need to go. The horizontal board at the top, which I can attach to studs, will have hooks to hold light weight (coats, etc.) exactly like the photo. However, the vertical boards will not hold any weight— they’d be purely decorative. What hardware would be best? Any other tips are welcome too. Thanks so much in advance!

I'd probably just throw some construction adhesive on the boards and use brad nails to hold in place while it dries or superglue the hole thing (with accelerator spray). If you really want to improve structure of a non-structural piece, you could use a 1/4" plywood backer to improve hold (this is how waynescott is applied which seems similar) or preassemble the whole unit and use pocket holes to tie vertical boards into horizontal boards, but honestly I don't think it's needed.

You have a couple options: -drywall anchors -attaching a horizontal board to the studs, and then attaching whatever you want to that

A pro tip from someone who has learned by mistake, pre-drill your screw holes with a smaller diameter drill bit so your screws go in effortlessly. As you apply more strips, you’ll be able to tell if your measuring payed off. Once all the boards are up, fill in all the holes created by the screws with DAP drywall repair putty.
