That's basically the right approach. Certain types of income (qualified dividends, long term capital gains) are taxed at lower rates than ordinary income, but even if you ignore that you would overestimate rather than underestimate your tax liability. I like to use http://excel1040.com , which is a very comprehensive spreadsheet that basically mimics a tax return. You can use it in a variety of different ways, by entering income into specific tabs for forms like W-2, 1099-INT, etc. or by using the manual override column directly on the Form 1040 tab.
