Open the laptop and disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard. · Here's the service manual that will help with this. Go to p.20 to view the procedure to remove/replace the battery. You don't have to remove the battery, just disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard as described. · c). Press and hold the laptop's Power button for a full 30 seconds and then release it. · d) Reconnect the battery cable to the motherboard, reassemble the laptop, connect the charger and check if it turns on OK. · If it does there may be a message saying that the date and time are incorrect. This is normal as the BIOS has been reset back to its factory default setting. Once the date and time are corrected the message won't appear the next time the laptop is started. Also any user definable settings in BIOS that have been changed by you to suit whatever system operating requirements you have, will have to be changed back again as well. Just wanted to give a 2024 update, I had this error message, and was attempting to re-flash the bios to resolve it, because the reset bios defaults option did not work, kept rebooting to the same issue. I formatted a USB drive to fat32, downloaded the bios file from the dell website, renamed the .exe to BIOS_IMG.rcv and copied it to the usb. Loaded the usb in the pc, used the ctrl + esc boot process and was presented with a new option in addition to reset bios defaults that allowed me to load bios from USB. I performed this on an Optiplex 7010 micro.

If you're seeing a bitlocker window. BIOS, or more accurately UEFI is 'probably' fine. A corrrupt UEFI usually bricks the entire board. But does still sound like it could be a mobo issue. Would normally check for disconnected ribbon cables or damage. But honestly, if it's still in warranty. Just RMA it. Any kind of prodding of the UEFI from outside the UEFI settings is practically guaranteed to be outside of your capabilities, entirely because you just don't have the equipment, software, diagrams or whatever needed to do that. Hi, my Dell Inspirion has this same issue which also developed on May 26th, 2023I've tried recovering the Bios with USB following the steps here https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000132453/how-to-recover-the-bios-on-a-dell-computer-or-tablet By downloading the .RCV files on a formatted FAT 32 removable drive. This has not resolved my issue and my computer still has a bios autorecovery boot loop. I tried to restore using bios 1.21.0(Apr 2023) as well as 1.4.0 (Jan 2021) and neither have fixed my issue.

You need to use another computer to go to dell.com/support.
Using your Service Tag, download the BIOS for the XPS 13.
Copy the file to a FAT32 USB key and rename it to BIOS_IMG.rcv.
Plug the key into the problem computer while it is turned off and reboot. You should now have the option of recovering the BIOS from the key.

To follow up on this for possible future readers. I contacted Dell support and they concluded my motherboard was broken. Since I turned out to have pro-support (I didn't know) they actually came to my work place and replaced the motherboard for me.
Afterwards I still had to fiddle around with the BIOS settings to get it working again though. Although I bought the device with Linux pre-installed their phone support people had no clue about it. So there's room for improvement there for Dell.
I whish all the best to future readers with the same problem..

Hopefully the BIOS is not corrupt to the point that it bricked the motherboard. Have you tried to remove the CMOS (coin cell) battery yet? If not remove it and wait for 15 minutes (Intel recommends 30 minutes). Then reinsert the battery and try booting. I have it working now. It was an issue with BIOS. I was finally able to reset BIOS after fiddling with the jumpers for about the 50th time. I guess I wasn't using the correct combination of resetting jumpers and holding down power button PC. It wasn't straightforward for me and took a lot of trial and error and some luck.

I wanted to add that I've downloaded the BIOS install file from Dell's website for the 660s. The filename is named 'Inspiron 660s Vostro 270s A11 BIOS.exe'. I've read online that I may need to extract the rom or header file from this executable file but I've been unsuccessful in doing that. The example I've seen say to run the executable file from the command line with the /writeromfile or /writehdrfile flags. When I try this nothing happens except that I receive an error message stating this is not a DELL computer (I'm running the executable file from my HP laptop).

I'm just curious, Is it physically flashing the bios chip with a socket of some sort?.
I've got a Dell laptop that is completely jacked up. The laptop is still under warranty, but I'm just curious if a motherboard replacement is what it needs.
Keyboard will not work, nor will the trackpad. I can sometimes boot to bios but cannot do anything because the keyboard doesent work. The only key that works in the bios is the windows lock button, and that cycles left through the menu, but i cannot escape, or select anything. I cannot Input the bitlocker code (keyboard wont work) no usb keyboard will work. I'm assuming no USB drivers are being loaded. I unplugged the battery to try and reset the bios.
The only key that works is the windows lock button, and that inputs a 4 into bitlocker. No other keys work.

Most major manufacturers have a hard-coded bios recovery sequence, whereby you place a specifically named bios image on a (usually) fat32-formatted flash drive, hold down 1 or more specific keys at power-on, and if the expected file is found, it'll be flashed to the chip. You'd need to google your particular line of laptop, download the latest bios version, and try and find the doc, if it was written up, or an internal techdoc was spidered. Alternatively, you can get a usb-attached eeprom programmer, and a set of 'whiskers'? Pull apart the machine, extremely carefully place the leads on the rigs (exposed) pins for the bios chip, and write a fresh image that way. Both doable, both non-trivial, if it's your first time/you don't need to do this repeatedly. As others have said, if it's under warranty, just kick it back to the manufacturer.
