I downloaded the latest windows desktop app from the Microsoft Store. I have the setting "Do not show notification if the app is closed" on the desktop app, however, I still get call notification on the desktop when the app is closed!
I dont like this always running whatsapp on my system! I want to use it when I want it and close after that. I dont see anything in the processess in the taskmanager too! Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Edit: I can see something called RuntimeBroker running along with whatsapp, I close it in the taskbar, then scroll down and in the services section, whatsapp is still there, I close it, but no use. Any call I get, it just opens and shows the call notification instantly.
Edit2: Solved it, thanks to u/metalron84. Solution is: On your windows start menu, search whatsapp, right click on the app > app settings > let the app run in the background = never.

How can I block whatsapp desktop app from being able to launch on windows 11

There seems to be two places this can be disabled:
- Open WhatsApp app, then Settings -> Notifications -> "When WhatsApp is closed"
- Right-click WhatsApp app in Start menu, More -> App Settings -> App Permissions -> Run in Background -> Disabled.
I did both on my computer.
Check %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\ for files and check %PROGRAMDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\. This is where user and system startup shortcuts are put, mainly user created ones, but not always.
I’ve tried using gpedit and adding whatsapp.exe to “Don’t run specified Windows applications” under User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System . But it still loads.
I’ve also tried adding whatsapp.exe to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Application Control Policies > AppLocker. But it still loads.
I also created strings int the registry under Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\DisallowRun - still loads
Any ideas what else can be done? I need to do the same with spotify also.
If you have applocker you could try that, if not then:
gpedit
Computer Configuration>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Software Restriction Policies
Create a new Software Restriction Policy, under Additional Rules add a New Path Rule and add the location of whatsapp.exe and spotify.exe then select disallowed
Or if using Windows Firewall that should be able to block them as well with an outbound rule blocking them from accessing the internet.
Is it me, or does the new Windows 11 desktop app keep running in the background despite having closed the window? I somehow continue getting notifications, which can get annoying when I don't want to be online.
The app also seems to run upon startup. The Startup option in Task Manager is already toggled to "disabled".
Whatsapp Desktop opens in the background, if i try to close it with task manager it reopens by itself after 30 seconds or so. Its pretty annoying since i get notifications even with it technically closed
Whatsapp keeps running in the background no matter what I do, Is there anyway to close the app?
