Hello well i had google photos app downloaded and well i pressed free up space thinking it would delete my photos on googpe photos but i didnt know they would delete photos from my camera roll. I lost a bunch of videos and images from 4 years ago. The thing is i go back on google photos and see many of the deleted videos/photos. Is there anyway to get all of them back into the correct album and with all the location/date data? I lost over 1000 media files and no theyre not in trash😫

They aren’t lost they are on Google photos and just not on your phone anymore

I would love to know what you would do about your photos and videos if your fone was lost or stolen??? No point in having them on your fone because once they are gonenthey are gone if you dont have the fone anymore. Hence why google photos exists so you can have them in the cloud and have space on your fone to take more and if you dont have your fone you still have the photos. I dont get why people need them on their fone.

Including correct metadata, file names/timestamps. Right now all the photos are in the Google Photos cloud, and while I use that extensively, I also like having my own local copies of photos.

I also like having my own local copies of photos Unless this is already the case, you're not retrieving the originals from Google Photos after using the "free up space" feature, unfortunately. Check your Google Drive for a Google Photos folder in case you enabled this feature and they might just be originals if you're lucky.

Effing Google Photos showed this message on my phone today. I am running close to limit on my storage (on Google photos) and thought this would be a great idea to free up space - until I realized fucking thing was freeing up space on my 512GB phone and not on Google. It was too late and all my photos are erased from the phone. So I got close to 480GB free on the phone and nothing on Google Photos. This is a really, really bad design on Google's part in that they don't even allow you to restore them back easily. At least show a proper warning for god's sake.

It doesn't go to the trash. It deletes them entirely. Luckily "free up space" only deletes images you've already backed up so you should still have the pictures/videos in Google Photos.

Check your devices trash. Google deleting originals without asking should be criminal imo. I shouldnt have to put hours of labor into hiding my photos from Google so they can't delete them while I clear space so I can receive and send emails again without paying.

Hi all! Can you help me? I can't seem to find the answer online.

Samsung Galaxy S20 | Android 11

I use Google Photos to backup my phone's camera roll. They backup successfully into my Google Photos account but when I try to free up space by using the "Free up 40 GB" button, it doesn't work. I still have all the photos saved locally.

Things I have tried:

Uninstalling & installing the app
Checking for app updates
Settings > Clear data/cache
Powered my phone on and off

I have like 1GB of of storage left on my phone so I need a solution to this. Thank you!

If anyone’s still having this issue, I found something that worked for me (only on iPhone though): Go to your Home Screen, long tap on the Google photos icon, and select ‘free up space’. It should then allow you to delete the photos you’ve already backed up instead of just saying ‘nothing to free up’.

I'm running into this exact issue, same phone and everything. I've used the free up space countless times before on different phones and it worked.
