Did you get a bill of sale with the year/make/model and VIN number? Edit: And what exactly do you mean when you say "all of it's paperwork"? Let me know what exactly you have. Also, are you able to contact the seller? Did they lose the registration? Are the able to obtain it? If so, maybe ask them to express ship it to you and pay them back. r/icbc on Reddit: Bought a vehicle without registration- what do I do?
March 9, 2024 -

Hi, I bought a vehicle recently and it came with all of its paperwork other than the vehicle registration. The seller brought the vehicle over to BC from Alberta and it comes with the vehicle inspection papers as well. The car seems to be in good working condition but due to the lack of registration papers I cannot get insurance in BC.

Should I try and sue the seller for the sale of the vehicle? Or should I try insurance again to see if I can insure without the registration papers from Alberta?

I need help! Thank you

r/icbc on Reddit: Update: I bought a vehicle without registration what do I do?
March 25, 2024 -

Ok, so about a month has passed since the initial purchase of the vehicle. As per the title goes, I purchased a vehicle in BC that was brought over from Alberta. The seller and I filled out the transfer papers, and he gave me the out of province inspection and his original bill of sale. However, I soon realized that I was lacking his registration info.

A month later I have finally found an insurance broker willing to help me. They tracked the VIN of the vehicle AND IT WAS NEVER UNDER HIS NAME. The vehicle is registered under two people, one in Alberta and one in Saskatchewan. The vehicle has been deemed as totalled in Sask even though the vehicle is in fine condition now.

I was told by the insurance broker to follow up with the registry in Alberta and BC to track down what happened with the vehicle and to see if there’s a rebuilt status that would allow we to finally register the vehicle in my name.

Let me know if you have any suggestions. The seller has stopped responding to me at this point.

If you don't hear anything for one month, or the registered letter is returned unopened, you simply go to an ICBC office and they give you the registration. Yes I've done it, no it's not hard, yes I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Traded bikes, filled out tax/transfer form for my old bike, I’m trying to recover papers so it will be insurable.

I have a bill of sale with names address and vin from seller.

The story is he bought it from his friend who bought it from a widow whose husband (last registered owner) is now dead. I believe this is a records request/new title as CPIC and Carfax come back clean and not stolen.

This is my second motorcycle and I feel a bit lost

When you get the name and address of current registered owner you need to send them a registered letter asking for the registration slip and a filled out tranfer form, let them contact you if they need help. If the letter gets sent back, do not open it just take it to ICBC with the Post Office paper work and when it is all notarised they will register the bike to you.

r/icbc on Reddit: Question about proof of ownership for a car
November 12, 2023 -

Hey there, I have a car in Germany that originates from BC. I have the ICBC vehicle registration, and need to get a title for the car. Any information on what services the ICBC offers, preferably for free, would be nice.

I know this was posted a year ago but for anyone else searching the same, I just went through the tedious process of Importing a car gifted from BC to Texas (if you're going through the import process, details below). BC/Canada doesn't do Vehicle Titles, their version is called Confirmation of Ownership. You/owner has to call ICBC and request a stamped copy be emailed and mailed to you. If you're not the owner, three-way call with the owner to authorize, or have owner call to make the request. To reach the right ICBC human who can make magic happen -----------> Call 604-661-2800, press 6,press 4, then press 1, request the letter and ta-da... ---- Below my detailed process regarding Import of personal vehicle from Canada to US (for anyone in similar situation as me). Hope it helps... This process was simplest for me, and solely based off my own painful experience importing a non-commercial vehicle from Canada to the US... If you plan to have you or the owner of car drive it through customs to avoid shipping costs and you're confused about the entire process and forms/documents, do yourself a favor if you can afford it, (can cost $1000+ detailed below) and do it all virtually by googling a Vehicle Customs Broker in the state you're planning to register it (they'll know all the right forms needed for registration in that state). You can find a broker before or after the car is already in your state (I did it after the car was driven to me). Only hassle is finding the right Vehicle Customs Broker so expect to call many. Some will tell you it can't be done online without a PAPS number, this is not true, and most others only import commercial cars or shipped cars, so keep looking-- the right one does exist! You can look for legit licensed brokers on official CBP (Customs and Border Protection) gov site. I called several off this list and only found one, Omega CHB, that said they could it online but only for Cali residents. Called a few in Texas via my own google searches but they were quoting me several thousands! Finally found a gem in Texas-- Patrick from Patrick Vasquez Customs Broker based out of San Antonio. Let me tell you!!! Patrick is the nicest and most efficient person and in about a week I got all my forms mailed to me. Their office only accepts cash (venmo etc) and will need you to sign a Custom's Power of Attorney so don't be alarmed by this but make sure the broker is legit! Aside from all the confusion with the necessary forms and documents, every Customs agent will give you different info which adds to the confusion. In my case, the owner of the car being gifted to me (family) drove the car from BC to TX and planned to import it at the US-Canada border, but were told I needed to be there. Agent said we could both drive to Mexico border and import car there (huh?), so they let the owner drive through normally, and the plan was to eventually drive to Mexico together (ugh). To be sure the Mexico trip wasn't going to be a waste, I called Mexico border and was told by Customs that I didn't have to drive to Mexico and instead could go to any CBP Port of Entry to import the car (turned out to be not true). Found the right Port in my city, close to our International Airport and when I went there, they said they couldn't clear the car without a specific Customs ID Number, and told me to find a broker. I experienced so many fml moments that I felt obligated to type out this long message. Broker fee $600, mandatory Customs Bond $300. Unless the car was manufactured inside the US which is probably not the case, expect to pay duty tax based off the current value of the car, they say Kelly Blue Book, but my broker found a better value than I was able to find so the tax was around $380 for a BMW. Total close to $1300. For me, this was money very well spent. I didn't have to do anything other than fill out the forms he emailed, and provide him with my IDs and other documents he needed. Took less than a week to get cleared and I received all final documents via email and physical copies mailed. Now in the process of Registering in Texas and finding out that the VIN inspection needed and can only be done at a Sheriffs department has a wait list that's about 5-6 weeks out (fun times).

And the easiest way to complete your sale is to go to your Autoplan broker together with the buyer and handle all of the paperwork in the broker's office. Don't forget to bring your plates! Learn more about the steps of selling your vehicle. Good news: as long as the vehicle you're importing meets safety standards and federal importing rules, and was not damaged in a flood or designated as a parts only vehicle, you can register it here. You may want to check with the Registrar of Imported Vehicles for what to keep in mind when importing a vehicle from the U.S.
