October 24, 2023Really interested in this set but am nervous about how it’ll hold up. Any recommendations?
Bought two of the chairs and a small table back in March. With the padding they are definitely comfortable. When the weather is nice, the wife and I sit out on the balcony and enjoy a morning coffee. September 26, 2024Interested in building this outdoor Ikea table. Any suggestions for what sturdy outdoor materials I should use or ways to make this cost-effective? 2nd Pic is Dimensions
On the cheap? Cedar fence slats. Like $3 each at the box stores. Pick the best ones. If you have a planer, you can plane the stock to 1/2 - 5/8. I've used these several times as a cheap outdoor wood.
Design the top to use the boards on their edge vs flat grain. This way to can rip them to whatever thickness you want. Maybe do a few glue ups for the legs, etc.
It's a fun project that you can say you did for $50.
I have draweboxes I made using this stock. They are 13 yrs old. Still have a ceder scent.

I'm considering getting this table for an outside area too. Being solid wood, I'm thinking that, even if it does wear when exposed to the elements, it'll be easy enough to sand back and coat with some exterior oil/stain. More on reddit.com

I was thinking that this SKOGSTA dining table would look nice in the yard. Is it possible to finish in a way that will last in the rain and sun? This is in San Francisco, so not the harshest climate.
I'd like to potentially have a ping pong top to put on it. Perhaps that could also shield it when it's not being used for dining.

Hard to tell if the original finish (per Ikea: 3 coats of clear lacquer) has any UV protection. You can add this yourself by coating with a clear exterior grade alkyd varnish (exterior products include UV protectant compounds) in gloss or satin finish as you prefer. Polyurethane won't bond to the lacquer, you have to use a different product. With any outdoor item, it will need re-coating/refinishing periodically. Putting a real cover (non transparent and fully waterproof, such as a heavy-weight tarp) on it when not in use will also extend its life.

I’m currently in grad school and I don’t have a ton of money to spend so ideally I’d like something nice that will not look terrible in a year. I saw these in person and they’re beautiful, but I’m nervous about how wood will hold up outdoors. This would be on a shaded balcony, that barely sees any sun haha. The balcony ledge is also pretty tall. I live near the ocean so I don’t know if the air will affect the wood too..this is my first place so I’m new to all of this stuff. Any suggestions or things I should know before purchasing?

We have this set for 3+ years now. It first lived outdoors for a year in Los Angeles where it got sun but little to no humidity or rain. We then moved cross country to Florida, used it indoors for a few months then moved to a balcony. It rains almost daily and it was not covered. Now it’s on our lanai where it is fully shaded. The only issue we had was the stain fading in a few areas on a couple chairs and part of the table top. It’s very easy to restain it though. No issues with warping or breaking at all.

APPLARÖ / NÄMMARÖ are nice funiture, but don't get them wet too often else you will have a warped mess after only a few seasons.
