2017 27" iMac vs 2021 M1 iMac
Just sold the same model 27" iMac b/c I have other Macs and my workflow is turning to mobility again. The bottlenecks of the 27" base are the 8G RAM, which is easily and pretty cheaply solved, and the fusion drive. There are Mac-oriented shops that'll upgrade the drive to a SSD, but it isn't a task for amateurs and may not be something that you want to take on. Give that machine some RAM and it'll smooth out a lot. Mine had 8G before I gave it 32G and my company-issued machine at my side gig is the same machine with 32G. Trust me, that's the 1st step, and the 27" is worth giving the RAM upgrade. This said, M1 is very smooth and very fast. I've noticed some stumbling on my 13" MBP M1 on occasion, but the OS, apps, and hardware are still young and getting ironed out. It is a fabulous machine. Edited to add: If your creative workflow requires plug ins, know that many plug ins are NOT compatible with M1 and have no schedule to be made compatible. More on reddit.com
