We run an in-house but open source pipeline ( http://github.com/spotify/Heroic ) and ingest basically everything into that. We scrape the k8s apis to get node/resource metrics into it, and inject sidecars to collect application metrics, as well as expose a http api for getting metrics into the pipeline. We’re GCP heavy so we also collect basically all GCP product metrics into it as well. We’ve got an in-house altering engine(we’re aiming to open source that) and an open-source grafana datasource for engineers to do all their Observability work/alerting. We’re a small team(5) doing all the observability platform work and trying to push this into the open more, so of course it’s a little rough around the edges, but for our use case it’s amazing to just dump everything into one pipeline and to be able to query it in a uniform way. With APM, if the product has the certain capability a team needs to survive, pricing becomes nearly meaningless. Dynatrace has proven to be as competitive in pricing as most listed on this list and as far as usecases go - they seem to have everything. With that said, as far as pricing goes, Instana is super simple and built for modern use-cases. More on reddit.com

What are your thoughts? It depends. Instana is great if you're running in the cloud or if you're primarily interested in monitoring applications. If you're willing to pay for that, you'll get a pretty good experience out of the box. Icinga 2 is great if you want to run the monitoring system yourself and want to monitor everything and the kitchen sink (and probably also your toaster).
