Recommendations to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet

I just learned it from wikipedia. Go the the phonology pages of languages you're interested in, click on sounds, hear recordings and read descriptions, look at the full IPA chart and do the same, etc. I just did that for a few months and more or less have full knowledge of the IPA.

What is the best way to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)?

It is mostly a straight memorisation exercise. Depending in your memory skills it could be as little as an hour or so, through to several hours over a couple of weeks to get it locked in.

My suggestions.

  1. Print out a copy

  2. Recite in order several times

  3. Use it to spell out words, reference your printout as required. You can use any printed material such as book or magazine as your source of words.

  4. As per 3 but without peeking at the printout. Note any you keep getting stuck on and look them up at the end. Focus on these few.

  5. Leave it for a day/week. Try 4 again. Focus on relearning the ones you forgot.

  6. Repeat 5 as required until the are stuck in your memory.

Macquarie University - International Phonetic Alphabet
From its foundation in 1886 the Association has been concerned to develop a set of symbols which would be convenient to use, but comprehensive enough to cope with the wide variety of sounds found in the languages of the world; and to encourage the use of this notation as widely as possible among those concerned with language. The system is generally known as the International Phonetic Alphabet.

The symbols are arranged by similarity to letters of the Latin alphabet. Symbols which do not resemble any Latin letter are placed at the end, the others section. Several marks can be added above, below, before or after letters. These are here shown on a carrier letter such as the vowel a.
