I've read online that 5G capability started with the 12. But someone I know has an iPhone that states it is an 11 Pro Max in the 'About' section in Settings, and yet it says 5G in the upper right corner of the phone.

No, it is not 5G capable, and it was one main reason why I switched to the 15 when it debuted last year. The 11 would sometimes be slow for me, and I noticed that phones with 5G usually did not connection issues

I bought and recently registered a new Smart sim today which is 5G. I can text normally but for some reason I can’t use the mobile data. Do I need to have a 5G device in order to use the mobile data in my Smart sim? Iirc the iPhone 11 pro max only allows up to 4G LTE. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

You should be able to use mobile data on your 4G iPhone with your 5G SIM. Your 5G SIM is backwards compatible to lower cellular generations. Is your SIM registered? Are you currently registered to a data promo? Is your phone on the latest iOS update? Have you tried checking your Settings > Cellular and see if your APN are correct and apps have access to Cellular Data? Have you tried putting your new 5G SIM on another phone and tried accessing the internet? Have you tried putting another SIM on your iPhone and tried accessing the internet? Have you tried moving places and tried accessing the internet? There are lots of factors on why you cant access internet. It may be your phone settings, your location, possibly your SIM registration, or something is amiss with your SIM card itself that needs calling to Smart’s hotline.

I normally have LTE on my phone (iPhone 11 Pro) and have been told by AT&T that my phone can not access 5G. However, I am currently out of town, and on a/the 5G E service (I don’t speak technology), as indicated at the top right of the Home Screen.
Can someone please explain/advise me on this? If I have been mislead about my devices or regions 5G access, I would like to use that as a negotiating chip for my phone bill. Also, please provide any info you think is pertinent that I’m overlooking. Thank you.
[Edit] Solved. 5G “E,” is not the same as “5G.” Thanks to those who understood and explained the difference.

The difference between 5G and 5GE is that 5GE isn't really 5G. It's a marketing term used by some carriers to indicate that they're using upgraded 4G LTE networks, but it's not the same as true 5G. Real 5G offers faster speeds and lower latency, and requires new infrastructure to be built. 5GE is basically just a faster version of 4G LTE, and it's a way for carriers to say that they're "next-gen" without actually offering the full 5G experience.
