I'm surprised by the number of copper suggestions here. I pipe distribution piping in houses in PEX-A (cold expansion) unless otherwise specd. Mechanical rooms get copper. The only advantage to copper is that it is harder for rodents to chew through. Mice are total assholes and go around and taste test everything. However I've seen lots of places with mice that leave the PEX alone, so who really knows what those bastards are thinking. Advantages to PEX: PEX expands if frozen. Uponor PEX-A will expand 3x before failing, water expands about 10% when it turns to ice. PEX-A is much slicker inside, friction loss is basically nil vs copper price (especially vs type K as someone else suggested) time saved contaminant/ph imbalance resistance impossible to miss a joint with PEX-A joining method far superior to crimp PEX, no metallic points of failure or corrosion less fittings/joints in runs (again with friction loss) Advantages to copper: mice don't chew it Editing my comment up top so I can stop sounding like a broken record: check out the Uponor FAQ . Aquapex has been in use since 1993 in North America, with billions of miles installed. Tested for 3 decades by independent researchers. It is not a new product (perhaps compared to copper it is). Hopefully this puts your mind at ease - but please keep in mind that I am referring to PEX-A specifically.
