Preference. I was happy for years with low-profile keyboards, and anything of regular height felt clunky to me. Now I prefer the more solid feel and greater overall travel of a chunky, heavy aluminum board with cherry profile keycaps. And my preferences will probably shift again at some point. It's just a matter of what you like. Answer from Accomplished-Lack721 on reddit.com

Low-profile keyboards: aside from the lack of customization, are there other reasons not to use them?

Normal vs low profile keyboard
Normal profile. Normal profile literally has hundreds of different options for customization including switches (linear, tactile, and clicky switches with different feeling and unique force curves), a huge selection of different keycaps in a multitude of profiles, as well as a selection of different stabilizer options and miscellaneous ways to customize your board that are not available for low profile boards. On the other end of the spectrum, low profile only has a handful of options for different switches and keycaps. If you want to get into customization at all, then normal profile is the way to go. If you want a portable keyboard that is small and easy to pack and will keep it (mostly) stock, then low profile is probably what you're looking for. More on reddit.com

Keychron V3 Low Profile Mechanical Keyboard (OPINIONS!) - PCPartPicker
I'm in the market for a low profile wireless mechanical keyboard. Why? Because it's cool. Recently I bought the Cooler Master SK622, on paper it ticked all the boxes. In reality I returned it. Anyways, this post is about the Keychron V3, it's a thin low profile design. More on pcpartpicker.com

I'm a programmer interested in getting a new keyboard. I want to consider low-profile options like the Keychron K3 Pro.

I've seen comments and reviews suggesting that they are great for typing.

Previous discussions about low-profile keyboards focused on their lack of customizability. I'm not interested in modding, so this is not a huge deal to me.

But I think those discussions kind of ended with that point. Are there any other reasons not to go for low-profile keyboards?

December 3, 2022 - The low profile mechanical keyboard is more ergonomically friendly thanks to its low profile mechanical switches and keycaps. You don't need to raise your wrist to type, which can eliminate the pressure on the wrist to some degree.

r/Keychron on Reddit: Keyboard Recommendation - Low Profile
January 9, 2025 -

I used to be a mechanical keyboard enthusiast, but after working in a large office with cubicles I went to a Mac Magic Keyboard and abandoned mechanicals.

I recently discovered Keychron and feel like I'd like to give mechanicals another try.

Wondering what you would recommend with these requirements?

  • Wireless

  • Low-Profile (I am very used to the very slim Mac Magic Keyboard)

  • 100% Full-size (or close)

  • VERY Quiet a strong preference

  • Mac compatible

  • Preferably something that has a solid feel to it, not too "plastic-y" feeling

I am not super strict on budget.

Currently leaning toward the K5 but I'm not fully clear even on the difference between K5, K5 Max, K5 Pro. Also it seems the "Mechanical Red" switches would be the most quiet.

I also saw some recommendations on buying separate Gateron silent keyboard switches, but not sure if that is overkill and what switches would work for a low-profile keyboard.

Low profile voice here. I don't do any customization and the low profile keyboards are just more comfortable to type in my opinion. I have a K4SE + wooden wrist pad, but, after many months, I prefer the Nuphy Air75 and the K5SE. The K4 isn't bad at all, don't misunderstand, but... a low profile is just simpler and better. Simpler because you don't waste time with wrist pads and better because the sound is more satisfying, the look is much more modern, the feel is better, the size is better, the weight is better, etc. Of course, that's my opinion. In case, just go with brown switches, don't bother with the red ones. I bought both low profiles with red ones and exchanged them later, because the linear ones felt strange. Save yourself the trouble of pulling out hundred switches. Low profile is quieter anyway. Also the PBS keycaps are nicer than the ABS ones, especially in terms of sound, but also how it feels. Therefore, K3 Pro or K5 Pro is the best choice depending on the size.
