It's largely a matter of vigilance and the exact product. They make laminate floors that are impregnated with resin and can be fully submerged for some time before there's an issue. They also make some that are as fragile as cardboard. And there's a big difference between spilling some water and having a long-term water exposure event (e.g. slowly leaking fridge supply line). That being said, my grandma has the cheapest of laminates in her kitchen at least 15 years old and she's had a couple water events over the years and they're still holding up okay. It's a long-term, uncaught water event that will hose your laminate--but that would hose a lot of flooring materials. I would at least spring for the waterproof laminate. More on reddit.com

A laminate floor is normally installed as a floating floor. No cabinets should be installed over the top of a floating floor, but rather around the cabinets. To go from laminate to tile, all laminate and underlayment would be torn out. The floor should be stable and often extra subflooring or cement board is installed. In addition, a Schluter type underlayment should be used. Appliances will need to come out including dishwasher, stove and fridge so that the tile can be installed under it. Note that laminate is not waterproof. Even those claiming waterproof-ness are not. They are waterproof for a certain period of time and any cut ends or edges will be more prone to water damage and thus, not good in areas with moisture/water (bathrooms and kitchens, entryways). Laminate is way easier and less time consuming. In certain areas I would prefer laminate, in wet area I prefer a semi textured ceramic tile. If you’re concerned with the chilly feet, you can install a heated grid under the tile. More on reddit.com

Having had all three in my kitchens, I vote LVP. I wasted too many hours of my life cleaning the grout in my tile kitchen on my hands and knees; hardwood is beautiful but I have a husband/dog/kid who are not gonna baby it so it’s a non-starter. People get snobby about LVP (and I admit the cheap stuff can certainly look cheap) but it’s popular because it’s practical and affordable and that’s not a bad thing.
