Are American Girl dolls really that popular?
In more upper-middle-class and upper-class areas, yes. Since I was a little girl from a fairly broke family in a fairly broke area, I never heard of them until I was an adult. Friends of mine from families that could afford an expensive-ass quasi-educational doll say they had one and loved it. The schtick is that the doll is a character, and is meant to be like a pre-packaged historical friend. There's little books about each doll, and accessories and clothes and all sorts of stuff. My baby sister is 7, and she's got one that apparently she's into. It makes it easy to get her presents, because all you gotta do is drop $10 on a book or $30 on a tiny dress and she will be PUMPED. They have creepy faces because dolls are creepy, especially dolls that are meant to look like children or babies. More on reddit.com
Can someone please explain why American Girl Dolls are so f***ing expensive?
It’s the brand, experience, and the stories. I’ve taken my daughter to the AG store in NYC for lunch and she loved it. (Disclaimer: she’s 5 and still on the Bitty Babies and Wellie Wishers, but she’s eying a bigger one. Maybe for her birthday next year.) I don’t think it’s outrageous for a gift for a larger birthday or holiday, but that obviously varies by family.

Certainly worth selling - especially if they're the pleasant company ones with the white bodies. Look on ebay for sold listings to see what they're going for and sell on ebay, poshmark or in american girl sales groups on facebook. I'd reccomend selling them seperate. Either all of Molly's stuff and the doll all of Addy's stuff and the doll etc. or each doll in the meet outfit (with the meet accessories if you have them and the book that came with them. Then other books as a seperate listing - depending on how many you have either a mixed character lot or smaller lots by character. The accessories & outfits individually as they would have been sold at the time - an outfit with the shoes and socks and such rather than trying to sell each piece one by one. 6 dolls should net you a decent price especially if they're the white bodied ones, Kirsten, Felicity and Josefina aren't avalible from American Girl at the moment so are likely going to be the easiest to sell. But the others are popular characters who will sell well too. More on reddit.com

I've found visual lists but they're all older and don't have every JLY or TM. There are a few dolls for sale near(ish) to me, but I want to know which they are before committing (looking to compare dolls to get as close to looking like my daughter as possible)

3 weeks ago - Courtney Moore, representing the feminist, technological, and societal changes in American society and the start of the AIDS pandemic in the mid 1980s · Nicki Hoffman and Isabel Hoffman, representing the turn of the millennium into the year 2000 · Pleasant Rowland gave two reasons for her initial creation of the line. One reason was to provide a doll the same age as the child who would be playing with it and present it as a friend or companion. At the time there were few long-term doll lines that focused on a girl at the ages of eight to ten; most popular brands of dolls outside of fantasy lines were marketed as either babies/young children to care for, focused on fashion, or teenage or adulthood ages to later aspire to.
