Map of the Literature
Does it include global literature, not just Western authors?
Absolutely. The map represents world literature — from every continent, including Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, not just Europe or the U.S.

Will I find my favorite author? What if someone is missing?
The map includes thousands of names, but no single poster can include everyone. If an author you love is missing, it’s usually due to space or legibility limits. We log requests for future updates.

The Map of the Literature is a truly gargantuan visualization of the 5000 years of literary masters and their works, showing how the different literary genres sprouted, branched and eventually evolved to their modern state. The high-resolution map catalogues over 7000 writers, poets and dramatists and the novels, poems and dramas that they published. Every dot on the map represents a single author and every small rhombus represents a literary work.

How to Create a Literature Map
There are different ways to create a literature map based on what kind of research you're doing. Here, we'll dive into two common mapping methods. Of the ones close to her, I haven't read many - but I can say that Arkady Martine's A Memory Called Empire is close-ish. Imperial power instead of Corporate dystopia. Poetry contests instead of gun-fu fights. The protagonist has a broken ghost in her head instead of guns for arms. Really good, though.

Many literary maps were created for use in the classroom, as this one published by Scholastic would have been. Included are many important works of literature and their authors as well as small illustrations of characters from these stories. Other information that is included are authors’ birthplaces, the supposed location where writer Ambrose Bierce went missing, and several historically significant locations.

Around the Year in 52 Books - Weekly Topics 2023: 31. A book found by inputting a favorite author on Literature Map Showing 1-50 of 67
This was a fun prompt and I loved playing with the Literature Map! I entered two of my all-time favorites, John Fowles and Hilary Mantel, who sadly passed away last year. Lots of authors whom I'd read previously appeared, but I ultimately chose School for Love by Olivia Manning, who was new to me but who matched with both authors.

For example, J.R.R. Tolkien's popularity among young people in the 1970s is reflected in a group of Middle-Earth maps produced during that period.
