r/synology on Reddit: Why my Synology DS916+ is not discoverable on my PC?
May 23, 2017 -

Hi,

Do you know what's the reason I can't see my Synology on one of PC's Network? Basically on one of the PC's I can see Synology as Media Device and Other Device and when I click any of those it takes me straight to a web browser. On my second PC I can see my Synology as Media Device, Other Device plus as Computer. When I click on Computer it takes me to all of the folders on my NAS rather than a web browser. My question is why I can't see my NAS as Computer on my first PC?

Thanks in advance

r/synology on Reddit: How do you access your NAS from Windows?
May 17, 2024 -

I have Windows 10, I was hoping I could just add the NAS to my Networking, but it doesnt seem to work that way. The only way it seems to show up under Networking is if I click This PC, then type in \\DS423NAS a the top in the address bar, it then shows up under networking and I can see the whole NAS, but when I reboot it disappears. I can add specific folders as a drive and that seems to stick around and just show up as drive Y or Z or whatever, but Id like to add the whole NAS as drive Z or whatever and have it stick around when I reboot.

Is there a way to do this? I have discovery turned on in NAS settings already, am I missing something?

If this isnt how you do it, how do you access your NAS from Windows and why do you do it the way you do?

r/synology on Reddit: Invalid characters in Synology 'Master Browser' might explain why some people have browsing issues when trying to find their devices
May 15, 2021 -

I wanted to test network browsing performance with my Synology enabled as a Windows network master browser, but found that it may be a broken service when I tried a simple 'net view' and noticed that nothing would return. Then I used 'nbtstat' to see what my Synology was advertising, and noticed this:

Node IpAddress: [IPADDRESS] Scope Id: []

       NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table

   Name Type Status

WORKGROUP <1D> UNIQUE Registered
WORKGROUP <1E> GROUP Registered

MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00

A proper master browser entry as displayed at a Windows command line should look like this:

..__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered

The dots are actually non-printing characters but should show up as dots - not smiley faces, so something seems to be amiss and non-standard here.

edit: tweaked formatting

r/synology on Reddit: "local" internet browser?
March 15, 2022 -

I have my eye on a Synology DS1520+ but have a bit of an usual requirement I thought I best check with the community first.

I am located in another country than my company office and plan on sending my local IT guy a DS1520+ which he merely has to plug in to the LAN and afford me remote access so I can do the rest. One thing I am interested in doing is to carry out speed tests from the local office LAN to various websites (eg. speedtest.net) so I can do occasional speedtests of our VPNs from various locations. My question now is whether there is some form of "internet browser" thats accessible via the Synology UI that I could use to achieve this?

Perhaps a more straightforward way would be to set up a VPN inside the Synology and then do the speed tests on my computer's browser, which then again begs the question of whether Synology supports the setting up of a VPN, which protocols it supports (Wireguard, V2Ray, ShadowSocksR, etc.), and whether it has some level of account management for VPN access?

I'd appreciate if anyone could advise on this and whats the best way to utilise the Synology to achieve this. Thank you very much.
