Hello everyone,
I'm about to purchase my first MacBook and I'm seeking insights from experienced Mac users. I've found that Apple store employees tend to push for higher-end models, and I'd like genuine opinions. As a PhD student, my laptop usage primarily involves online meetings, article reading, and office apps, with occasional Netflix and YouTube. I don't engage in gaming or heavy coding/editing programs. I aim for this laptop to last at least 5 years.
The Apple representative suggested that the base model with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD wouldn't suffice due to my habit of opening numerous tabs and word documents simultaneously, sometimes up to 30 tabs. Do you think this is accurate? Would the base model meet my needs, or would I significantly benefit from upgrading, considering the substantial cost difference?

It will be fine with 8gb Ram, the storage may bother you but it depends if you do care to save movies, series, photos, games. If you only watch streaming then is ok 256gb, saving alot of documents or music including images will not going to full the storage in middle term. Everything you have pointed is casual use included 30 tabs, you might never going to experience lag even you start to suffer some slow performance is easy to resolve. You will be fine, I use my macbook m2 15 base model 8gb Ram, 256gb storage and it runs incredible well that I cannot believe that. And I used it to play emulation games, documents, browser. Everything at the same time. Again dont trust at all others people said that 8Gb of RAM is equivalent as 16gb in windows, that is false statement. I am tech guy, some high end laptops windows with 8gb of ram can perform incredible well, but cause windows laptops are much cheaper than macbooks, they could afford to put more RAM. Go for the base model. You will be fine.

8gb is perfectly fine for your needs. people on this subreddit really underestimate 8gb, and think that having more than 1 safari tab open on 8gb will crash the computer.
