Now, this commonly repeated nonsense is wilfully ignoring the obvious – macOS is far more erratic and bug-ridden than it used to be. Now, you're better advised to choose the OS release that is most performant for the age of your Mac. Usually, this is the OS that came pre-installed on the Mac when it was new. Sadly, macOS updates these days carry a performance and reliability cost. Apple has accumulated so much technical debt – they have a growing list of low-priority bugs – which they never fix; these carry over from release to release, plus new ones are (inevitably) introduced with each release. These accumulate into a worsening experience. (In the OS X era when Apple weren't fixated on annual releases, developers had longer to resolve them and they released plenty of sub-release updates. These meant that list of bugs remained in check. So, OS X users came to enjoy stability for longer.) Apple don't do this anymore. Presumably, it is Tim Cook who demands on a new OS to coincide with annual hardware announcements. So, every 12 months a new version of macOS is released offering UI skin-lifts and cosmetic fluff to the euphoria of those easily mesmerised by wallpapers, screensaver, stickers, animations etc. This has been case for the last 4 years of releases. October 3, 2023Hey folks, I’m still on macOS Sonoma 14.7 and debating if I should upgrade to 15.0 or wait for the next update. I’ve heard some people say 15.0 isn’t super stable yet. Anyone here upgraded and can share their experience? Should I go for it or hold off for now?
I installed it, day one and I had the WiFi issue.. for me it was also Ethernet issue. I could do zero work, and I had to downgrade. Apple macOS verification servers were off for 4 days straight, so I couldn’t do that either and I stucked in DFU mode or whatever that was.. I searched online and the only solution was to wake it up with a second Mac, and I had to borrow one from a friend. I would strongly recommend stay away from it for the moment, /especially if your work depends on it/ as it doesn’t provide any “life changing” features. Gear: M1 Max 16” 32c More on reddit.com

In general, they are just the names of the major yearly updates of the same OS. New features are added, others deprecated, bugs are fixed. As time goes by, new software will stop supporting old OSes at they lack key features. Likewise, Apple will stop supporting old hardware in their Os - typically a new Mac will be able to update these major updates for 5-6 years, after which the machine will only receive security fixes, for a total of 7-10 years of support. Unless there is a specific issue, it is advised that you use the latest OS possible. Newer= better. But: Often new bugs are introduced, and/or vendors of specialized packages are slow to add support for OS changes, so users of Adobe, etc sometimes have to wait a few months for os and app updates to sync up. Keep an eye out on the vendor website of the specific app you use.

After a week of heavy use, really heavy use, I can say now that this new update sucks. Here's the deal, I got a 2018 MacBook Air, and I know its not the most powerful machine in the planet, but has decent hardware, yet, Apple create a system that feels running in a 2009 machine, Its really slow to just open a simple settings app, or a Finder window, not to mention a third party app, can take up to 10 seconds, the new Dynamic Wallpaper makes that the fan spin all the time, so I deactivated, the mouse pointer shows a terrible lag when I move it too fast and if I'm downloading something is even worse, its unusable. I can continue, but Im getting angry just writing all this. It's a trillion dollar company that is presenting something terrible, in my opinion. But I want to read your opinion guys. BTW, I installed Sonoma as a fresh install.
