Can someone sell me on what made the show/series good?
I haven't watch the anime nor do I know anything about the story aside from it being originally a manga series. But the anime made a lot of buzz when it came out and lots of people praised it. The only thing that stopped me from watching is the artstyle since I'm not big on overly cute/moe-ish design. Pretty shallow reason, I know.
So I'm curious on what made the fans of the show stick with the series. Is it the characters? Lore? The world? Or something else?
P.S: I know something dark happens since everyone won't stop yapping about it. I don't know what it is, so no spoilers!
Update 1 : Just wanna say, thank you all for your input :). I've started watching and I'm currently at episode 3. Along with some discussion piece by Semblance of Sanity. The first episode's really great! So far I'm enjoying this XD.
riko's development That's the entire story though, and the whole point of exploring values. The manga doesn't outright tell you "hey I gained a new power after this bossfight" like a video game or your average onepiece/naruto type meme, it let's you notice the more subtle changes yourself. Maybe that's what you're having a hard time noticing. Binge-reading the entire thing in one go does not let you much time to think about the story or pay attention to details which is how MiA delivers a lot of its lore elements. Her development isn't a night and day change in personality but she is learning about the reality of the abyss, and while she is still driven by curiosity and tends to go head-first into trouble, she is way more "serious" (may not be the right word) than she originally was. reg's development It's not as noticeable perhaps but he still evolved a little in character. The difference though is that reg's history is unknown and his only goal is to find out, so it makes sense that he seems more lost than riko. Reg changed most at idofront and iruburu because he was forced to act on his own without riko to babysit him. the impact of heroes on the world / worldbuilding They have none, again, you're missing the point, this isnt some Naruto / One-piece type story where the main character is saving the world or affecting everyone around them. This is a story where a bunch of kids commit guaranteed suicide by going down the abyss knowing they can never go back out, because they want to find answers at the bottom. They are at the bottom of the food chain and they are at constant risk of getting hurt, so it makes sense that they avoid interacting too much with their surroundings. Since we also discover the abyss through their journey, it would make no sense to infodump us on other nations or surface commerce when we will simply never use that info considering they are now past the point of no return and humanity is behind them. World building is done through more subtle hints and imagery, sometimes bonus pages, but again, infodumps are not that common unless they are mandatory to understand the story further. manga and children No comment here, yes, tsukushi is a pedo, the anime does a good job at censoring it / tuning it down to a very reasonable level, so if the manga is difficult to read because of it the anime is an option. That's a valid criticism MiA deserves. More on reddit.com

Made in Abyss (Season 2) Final Thoughts Thread
Sweet merciful Christ I never though that a stick in the butt would seem light in the horrors compared to the downward spiral of degeneracy we saw in season 2. I feel like I need to go confess my sins, scald myself in a shower, hit myself in the head with a rock to try and forget some of the things I witnessed this season. The Pros: Music top notch, animation pretty as always, fights were good, rip and tear was awesome. The Cons: We went down a dark DARRRRRK path with the fetishes this season. Vueko deserved such a much better and happier ending.... really really hate her ending. Confirming a season 3 with no material to even attempt this and the author is slow to release any content. All in all, I'm amazed how much I enjoy the ride even with all the degeneracy along the way. 9/10 would sosu again. More on reddit.com

Made in Abyss S2 - Episode 1 Discussion
Given the episode is out, I can probably say this - I played ukulele on the track that played during the title reveal!! I didn't think it was gonna be in episode one let alone right there. The newly transformed Nanachi witnessing pure horror, kept by Bondrewd as an assistant before escaping the facility with Mitty. The world that Riko, Reg, and Nanachi live in might be beautiful, but it’s also hard and unforgiving. This harsh aspect of the world is built up in a natural way from the beginning of Made in Abyss, so while seeing Riko bleeding from her eyes from the Curse and the horrific human experimentation carried out near the end of the season is terrible, it doesn’t come from nowhere and doesn’t really feel like it’s inserted just for shock value.
