I'm a senior marketer and have encountered similar things. I've also pitched new business agency-side where similar requests pop up from prospective clients. Delivering some education to give them a teaser is something that can genuinely set you apart. I often am able to set myself apart from the competition because I don't mind giving some info up front. Throwing together a few high-level slides after they give me access to substantial data requests I have in return not only proves I know my stuff, but gives me deeper visibility into the situation I'd be stepping into, and whether I actually want to work with them. If you do it under condition of getting access or data for various systems like GA, etc., the value of reducing YOUR risk is easily worth the couple hours it might take. Any company that balks at that doesn't understand that you can't provide what they are asking for without insight and data, and that's a warning sign. Many here feel you need to be paid for doing anything. I personally don't agree in every case (although some for sure) and I've gotten jobs and won business because I was willing to do that and another candidate balked. It also helped that I blew them away with what I frankly consider "the basics" that took me no time at all to pick out as low-hanging fruit. It was a basic pitch deck. Further, the true value to them is not just in the knowledge, but the ability for you to flawlessly execute. So think of it this way--if your time costs you say...$100/hr, and it would take say, 3hrs to do the presentation (assuming they gave you data), would $300 be worth knowing exactly what sort of circumstances you were walking into? It would also give you a chance to quantify the value you bring to the table in terms of potential lift, which gives you MASSIVE negotiation leverage if you can turn the conversation to the amount of value you can deliver vs. just what they think they want to underpay you by. Yes it's possible. That's exactly what I did. I dropped out of college after my sophomore year (with a 3.8 GPA) and never looked back. If you try applying at a traditional agency that focuses on offline media you're going to have one hell of a time moving up and a lot of ass kissing to do. If I were in your position I would look for an entry level job at a digital marketing firm. Why digital? 1 Your age is an advantage here because you grew up with computers and don't know a world without them. I've worked at two large digital marketing agencies and the average age was 27 at both. 2 There are no gatekeepers online. After you get some experience and can hold your own you have the option of starting your own agency or freelancing. This is what I did after quitting my agency positions. Once you build up some level of reputation you'll have a book of business that will last a lifetime. More and more offline ad budget is moving online and believe me, there's a HUGE demand for great marketers. I've landed jobs at two large digital agencies and quickly moved up to director level positions, nobody cared about me having a degree. The cool thing about being a marketer is that your campaigns will speak for themselves if you're any good. If you show true passion for your work, develop an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and strive for constant self improvement there's no reason you can't do this. Here's what you need to do (imo): Find a specific discipline within marketing that fascinates you and focus on becoming the best at that every single day. Don't try to learn and master everything, a jack of all trades in marketing is worthless. For me that discipline is copywriting and PPC advertising.
