Looking at getting an affordable mattress for the spare room and saw ads for people getting a mattress in a box while I was scrolling tiktok. Has anyone gotten one before and how comfortable were they? Is it something to not even bother with or feasible for a bed only getting used a few times a year? I bought a queen mattress from IKEA for $300 as a stop-gap when I moved house. It was only supposed to be temporary until I found a better one, but I liked it so much I kept it. I've had it 8 years and it's still like new. I loved it so much I bought a second one (but of s slightly different style) for my spare room and that one is just as good!

Recently went to mattress firm and one of the sales associate was telling me the life expectancy difference between bed in a box and having a mattress delivered as is (essentially already at length and shape and wrapped in plastic) just wondering if anyone can confirm/deny if this is true or not? Salesmen typically don't recommend bed-in-a-box models because they threaten their bottom line. There are some differences in construction, but in some ways boxed models are superior and in some ways non-boxed models are superior. Additionally, many manufacturers use the exact same coils on their boxed and non-boxed options, so it's not always a difference there either. The point below about not being able to roll wire-tied coil units IS a good one though. If you're looking for a tired coil system, you typically can't get these in a box (with the exception of a few rare coil units).

I manufacture bed in the box mattresses and flat pack mattresses. Yes there is a justifiable difference. We have to scale down our sku’s for the box mattress to qualify for the 85.00 ship anywhere in USA UPS price. Has to be under 150 lbs. and 165 total inches. This leaves us with no choice but to use lightweight coils and low density foams. There is a place for these mattresses temporary use 1-2 years. Guesthouse fillers etc. I highly recommend shopping by specification and learning more about their construction before purchasing.

I read an article online that they don't last very long, hot, and the ones with cooling gel doesn't last. I've used my current mattress for over 20 years now, so I'm the type that doesn't change their mattress often. Asking for owners of in-a-box mattresses, are they good for long term, do they sag? Or should I buy the old style spring mattress? I'm a side sleeper and my current mattress often hurts my shoulders everytime I wake up.

Thanks for the reply. I'm quite positive that the mattress is the cause of my shoulder pain, I often have to crack the area around my left collarbone a lot in the morning, my old mattress doesn't even have springs, it's just a bunch of sponges and random junks merged together 😂. So some parts of it are soft because of sponges and some are hard because of the junks.
Since you said that mattress these days don't last more than 10 years, that really clear things up. I've been trying to find a mattress that last a lifetime but I know now that it's impossible, so I might as well find one that I'm most comfortable with. Thanks again, you're being very helpful :)

painting all bed in box mattresses with such a broad stroke isn’t fair. there are garbage ones and terrific ones. vac packing and rolling it up does limit the construction and materials, but doesn’t mean it can’t be good. i love my naturepedic eos which came squished and rolled, albeit in several boxes. 6 years in there is no perceivable dips or sags. would def buy again.
