Should you buy a new mattress or a mattress topper?
Mattresses should last 8 to 10 years. If you've had an uncomfortable bed for less than that, a mattress topper can reintroduce comfort to your sleep. Mattress toppers are great for softening a bed that's too firm, increasing motion isolation, and, in some instances, introducing cooling features, but if your bed is sagging, lumpy, or no longer supportive, a mattress topper is only a bandaid fix. If your bed is older than 10 years, look for a replacement in our best mattress guide.
What type of mattress topper is the best?
It depends on your sleep needs. Down mattress toppers are plush and cushy, which is best for those who prefer a soft feel. On the other hand, memory foam and latex are both firmer materials with more support. Latex tends to be cooling, but you can also find special cooling memory foam mattress toppers as well.
What is the difference between a mattress topper and a mattress pad?
A mattress topper can significantly alter a bed's feel and is typically made of foam or latex. Many mattress toppers are between two and four inches thick and sit on top of your mattress. Mattress pads are usually filled with down, down alternative fibers or wool and add a thin plush layer to your bed, but won't necessarily add more support. They go over your mattress like a fitted sheet and are usually easy to wash and can protect your mattress from dirt and extra wear and tear. Though for waterproofing and protection from bedbugs, dust mites, and dander, you'll want to use either along with one of the best mattress protectors.

I'm looking to get a mattress topper to soften up my firm mattress. Often there is a choice between a 2" and 3" topper, 3" being more expensive of course. If the cost wasn't much difference, should you always go for 3"?
I'm not looking for a huge change to my mattress, so I think a 2" could be enough to do the trick. I'm also a stomach sleeper so I don't want to "sink" in too much. I'm 6ft 185lbs so I'm kinda big, though, and I wonder if a 2" topper would flatten too much under my weight. But it depends on the material as well.
I dont know what topper I'm going to get. I was looking at the sleep on latex soft topper a few minutes ago and it seems good, but I have no idea until I try it I suppose. They also have a 1" topper as well which I haven't seen often. I would think that would be too thin, but I don't really know
