You can onboard without a license key as you’re describing . You will need to purchase X number of licenses from your Microsoft partner and true up . I thought this was really interesting. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (the $5.2 / month license, not free windows defender) is getting a cheaper $3 SKU called P1 and going to rename Defender for Endpoint to P2.

IMO - The $5.20 is on par with other "next generation" solutions so selling the full feature SKU should be a standard thing to do. As someone else mentioned, throw Huntress in and let it manage Windows Defender. You get the benefits of the Huntress agent and their SOC. You get centralized management and monitoring in a portal that does not suck. Alerting goes directly into your PSA, which Microsoft has yet to figure out unless you use a janky Power Automate/Flow or email, which can be tough for some PSAs to parse. The biggest selling feature to Defender for Endpoint to me is the automated response. Without this, you're putting yourself in a position to generate more work that will easily exceed the difference between the SKUs.
