Why was early to midcentury typography so good?
Before desktop computers, WYSIWYG software, and digital printing, design was a trade that relied upon a lot of specialized hand skills by a collection of highly-skilled tradespeople. Printed materials that didn’t get mass-produced were often made by hand. There was a lot of need for sign painters. Even in the 80s when I was growing up, hand-lettered signs were everywhere. Every grocery store I remember visiting in those years, for example, advertised their weekly specials with hand-lettered posters in their windows. That meant there was someone in the back, or a sign shop in town, that had people getting paid to letter signs. And those people were also the ones making protest signs after hours. There are sign painters still practicing today and they do beautiful work. But their work takes time and costs money, and it’s faster to just run something off on the nearest desktop printer. Unpopular opinion: I hate mid-century modern
I like Scandinavian and transitional. It's a lot easier to find pieces once you know the name of the style you prefer. https://havenly.com/blog/interior-design-types More on reddit.com
Graphic Design Books from/about the 1950s
Don’t know if you’re into typography but if so I want to recommend the documentary Helvetica . It deals with the transition in style between the 50s and the 60s, just looking at it through the lens of the development of the font Helvetica. Fascinating stuff! More on reddit.com
What is this type of graphic design from the 2000s called?
People have attempted to give taxonomy to design styles. It's a futile gesture since design can be very broad and incorporate lots of styles. This is somewhere between 'Global village coffee house' and 'Curly girly' Eta: source: https://cari.institute/aesthetics/curly-girly More on reddit.com

The Moderns: Midcentury American Graphic Design – SHOP Cooper Hewitt
The book is made up of generously illustrated profiles, many based on interviews, of more than 60 designers whose magazine, book, and record covers; advertisements and package designs; posters; and other projects created the visual aesthetics of postwar modernity. Some were emigres from Europe; others were homegrown - all were intoxicated by elemental typography, primary colors, photography, and geometric or biomorphic forms. Some are well-known others are honored in this volume for the first time, and together they comprised a movement that changed our design world.

April 20, 2024 -
Watching this video and i see these nice, seemingly handmade protest signs and it reminds me of some of the older packaging designs i see on fonts in use, usually from midcentury, in particular the 70's. It makes me wonder how so many great fonts were so good, yet so ubiquitous. I figured it could make for a good conversation.

it used to be important to make good things, to make things the right way, and to make things that would last. now it's only important to make things fast so we can make more money, yay capitalism
