This Denver ranch house was a traditional, 8’ ceiling ranch home when I first met my clients. With the help of an architect and a builder with an eye for detail, we completely transformed it into a Mid-Century Modern fantasy.

r/floorplan on Reddit: Designing a mid-century ranch house
January 7, 2024 -

I've decided that one of my last big dreams in life is to design and build my own mid-century ranch home. I've looked at all the blueprints from websites like Eplans etc. and I even bought a couple of .pdfs from eBay (kind of a waste of money IMO), advertisements from the 1950s for mid-century ranches. But I can't seem to find what I need.

Obviously when push comes to shove, when the day is ready for me to build, I will hire an architect.

Still in the meantime, I'm hungry for more mid-century blueprints to read through. Does anyone have a good source they can recommend? I'm looking for something with a slanted roof, very large windows to the backyard (wall of windows) and an eat-in kitchen that maximizes space. A 3-4 bedroom with at least 2 baths. Yes, I know most actual mid-century ranches only had 1 bathroom and many architectural features we find impractical today; I'm just going to put a very slight modern upgrade on it while staying as true to the original feel as I can.

I feel like I missed my calling to be an architect. I just love reading through blueprints so much. If anyone can recommend where I should head from here without spending too much more money, I'm all ears.

Have you considered buying actual books? https://www.burkedecor.com/products/case-study-houses But I’d also look at Pinterest. Lots of mcm floor plans. Post your favorites too please!

Nice - my wife I and I would LOVE to buy or build a modern interpretation of a MCM. Not sure how practical it will be, but that's the dream. We've actually stayed in a few FLW homes - you can rent them on AirBNB or the like. And no, nothing crazy like Falling Water - Frank Lloyd Write made smaller Usonian homes as well. It helped me understand the homes to read about a bunch of the concepts he used first, then see them in practice, the spend a few days with them. I love clear story windows. I love having the front of the house will limited windows, the private back yard with HUGE doors/windows. I love hiding the front door. I love having large entertaining spaces and small private portions of the home. I love having all the bedrooms off to one side or down a wing. I love the concept of "do not cover", so no paint, drywall, wallpaper, etc... everything is the material that it is (and not really practical anymore). I love making the inside and outside melt into each other. I realize that not all MCMs do that, but even a portion would be AWESOME. We realize we would need to modernize the designs for today. Fun fact, the FLW foundation licensed several of his designs to a company that makes modern takes on Usonian designs. (I also reason that's not the end all be all of MCM. My wife's cousin lives in a Mies van der Rohe designed townhome, and there are several other MCM designers in my area.) Sorry for rambling - just excited to see someone else in the same boat as us.

Firstly, the growing automobile culture of the 1950s allowed for the development of suburbs that required new, cheap, and fast construction and where larger lots could accommodate a larger, family-sized houses. The Ranch house’s long and low form, expandable ‘rambling’ floor plan, simple detailing, and modern materials made it an excellent answer for these needs.

April 13, 2023 - The hall bathroom is a fantastic size, but most of the details will eventually need to be replaced. I actually don’t mind the retro vanity or even the faux marble formica countertop, but the original sinks have big rust holes in them, and I think it’s time to modernize the space a bit so that it lasts for the next 60 years.

I am considering purchasing this ranch home. I have two questions. *How can I give it a more mid century vibe? *Since it has two front doors, I am considering whether I should make the door that's more in the center a big window to add more light inside the home.

November 21, 2019 - Do you want to learn more about this horrifying element of America’s housing history? I recommend that you start with Ta Nehisi Coates’ The Case for Reparations, published in the Atlantic. There were two major design styles in play during the history of the Mid-century ranches. One was the ranch, representing modernism and future thinking.
