I've done lots of early game vanilla things. I've never touched the mod before but I'm keen to start!
What contraptions would you recommend to a beginner, any tips to share, or pitfalls I should avoid?
My current plan is to make a automated cooked meat and leather farm 🐄

I would say : Tree farm. Simple wheat farm that can later be converted to sweet rolls if you want. A workshop with press, washing setup, smelting, bassin for mixing, bassin with a blaze for brass. Since you will need a bit of power here I recommend a windmill that you speed up quite a bit. With this you can start making everything and most importantly a mechanical crafter. Maybe from now you will lack ores a bit, you may want to look into simple drills or quarries to get a lot of stuff.
