I'm looking for something dark and weird. Think along the lines of Martyrs (the French original) as your litmus but could be any type: realistic, supernatural, sci-fi, I'm not picky about genre. I'm just interested in extreme horror.
Except you can’t say any of the following movies:
Serbian film
Martyrs
Salo or the 120 days of sodom
August Underground trilogy
Cannibal Holocaust
I Spit on Your Grave
Any Lucifer Valentine films
Oldboy
Men Behind the Sun
Oculus
Eden Lake
The House that Jack Built
Human centipede 2
Any Ari Aster movie
Antichrist
Funny games
Inside
Tetsuo the Iron Man
Requiem for a Dream
Nekromantik
Audition
Henry portrait of a serial killer
Megan is Missing
Jacob’s Ladder
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Hostel
Guinea pig series
Suspiria

Don’t get me wrong, some of these films are pretty good. But I see the same titles repeated over and over again under every thread asking a question about disturbing films. I want to see some hidden gems, some less-talked-about movies, etc. Feel free to recommend anything that’s not in the list above.

I’m a horror freak personally and seen a lot of horror movies that have made me sick , some include the carnival holocaust and the man behind the sun , and human centipede? Any others??
The likes of Martyrs, Eden Lake, The Poughkeepsie Tapes. Recommendations for movies that leave you "broken" for a while. Doesn't matter if they're psychological, body horror or possession movies....anything that messed you up
Here is my letterboxd list of over 200 of the most disturbing movies of all time (horror and otherwise) listed in order of which ones disturbed me the most. View in list mode to see my shock value and quality ratings for each film. Everything after Hard Candy I've yet to watch but am working on when I find time. Recommendations are welcome!

For me, I'd pick The Strange Thing About the Johnsons. Sure, there was a little blood at the end of the film but the main "thesis" or the "theme" of the film is what that makes this movie uncomfortable and disturbing.
I wont say what the thesis is, cause of spoilers. You could watch it on YouTube though, but trigger warning because the movie contains themes like family sexual abuse.
Anyway, I have seen disturbing movies that show themes like war, gore, torture, etc but I'm curious if there are films that did like "Strange Thing About the Johnsons" did.
Maybe psychological horror?
Atroz (aka Atrocious) is a 2015 Mexican film about two really messed up serial killers who are caught by police after a car accident. Their investigation leads them to discover video evidence of the atrocities the men have committed.
Not since A Serbian Film has a movie felt so nasty. It's disgusting, gory and not for the faint of heart as they say.
The movie is very convincing which I'll give credit, feeling almost far too real.
Trigger warning: this movie contains strong sexual violence. If you gonna watch it, be sure you are in a good mental space, because this one really is messing with my psyche.
When I say 'disturbing,' I don't just mean gory. I want a horror movie that scares you on a psychological level, if you know what I mean (but not involving rape). Also, I apologize for my poor English.
I’ve seen cannibal holocaust and I spit on your grave and they’re the worst I’ve seen… so they got me thinking of gruesome and disturbing movies… so as almost a psychology experiment, I ask.
I’ve loved almost all recommendations on this sub so far. I’m looking for disturbing movies that just make your head spin and make you go WTF! I recently watched the girl next door after reading someone mention it on here. I’m looking for similar recommendations( if they’re based on a real life incident even better ) TIA
Most of which I haven't seen, except for Suspiria. This morning I read a list of favorite foreign movies (all horror) from one of my favorite directors and Martyrs was one of them. I haven't seen it but I read up on it as well as found a thread on Reddit that asked what people's interpretation of the ending was.
So my question is, is there a movie that you've watched that truly messed with you a while after watching it or watched it knowing it would be disturbing and wonder why you watched it anyways?
UPDATE: I'm not really looking for ideas of things to watch just curious what others experience/opinions are
I’ve seen some pretty disturbing horror movies but I was wondering what your guys picks would be. I’m looking for movies that have been made in between 2010 - 2023. I know there’s some pretty disturbing ones that were made before then but I’m interested in how things have changed and what’s new in the “disturbing” category of horror. Also don’t mind mentioning Midsommar or Hereditary, I’ve seen both.
When it comes to horror, people often think of slasher films or something packed with blood and guts. But honestly, some of the most disturbing films manage to get under your skin without showing a drop of blood. The psychological tension can be way more unsettling than all the gore in the world.
Take The Babadook, for instance. It’s not really about the monster itself; it’s about grief, depression, and the weight of parental responsibility. There’s barely any violence in it, but that creeping sense of dread lingers long after the credits roll. You don't need blood to make people uncomfortable if you’ve got existential dread, right?
Another great example is The Others. The film is all about mood and atmosphere, with little to no graphic scenes. Instead, it keeps you on edge with its dark setting, strange happenings, and constant sense that something is deeply wrong. It’s the perfect example of how a movie can disturb you without ever resorting to gore.
So, do we really need gore to be disturbed? Which movie was pretty terrifying but there was not a drop of blood spilled?
I love all types of horror.. and It takes a lot to get to me, being such a horror fan.. but here are my top 5 brilliant but disturbing movies💀🩸🔪

⚫️A Serbian film
⚫️Terrifier 3
⚫️ Tusk

Hi! So like most gen z’ers I’m pretty desensitised to just about everything, so would like some really messed up or disturbing movie recommendations! I love psychological horrors/thrillers and found footage and would prefer if the movies are available on UK Netflix or Amazon Prime. Thanks in advance :)
I'm looking to watch something (for free) tonight that will give me nightmares. What's everyone's scariest and/or most disturbing movie recommendations that are currently available on Netflix? This can include documentaries, psychological thrillers, etc.
Below is my ultimate letterboxd list of the most disturbing movies (horror/otherwise) in existence. I'm looking for more recommendations to add to it. What am I missing?? (The list is in order of which movies disturbed me the most personally, everything after Hard Candy I've yet to watch but am working in getting around to)
