Sorry if this is a stupid question but I’m from the UK so the whole sale tax thing is a bit confusing for me!
I am going to NYC in September, but we are also visiting Atlanta for a few days.
Shopping wise, I want to go to Trader Joes, Target, Sephora, Ulta, those kind of places…
I understand Sephora will be the same price across the USA, however tax wise, am I best buying in Atlanta?
And for shops like Trader Joes and Target, will prices be different in Atlanta than NYC?

You probably don’t really need to make sales tax a big factor. It’s 8.875% in NYC and 8.9% in Atlanta, so basically the same. Groceries are sales tax free in both cities (as in most of the US). Probably the biggest difference is clothing - items under $110 are tax free in NYC but not Atlanta. Trader Joe’s has the same prices everywhere but Target and many other stores don’t. Overall you can probably do what most Americans do, and just not worry about it.

For the last year or so that I’ve been buying Skims (In New York) I have been able to get a refund on sales tax. However, I put in an order last night and apparently my county recently required it to be collected on clothing under $110 and I can no longer get refunds on tax past March 1st (Publication 718C). Just a warning for all of my NY ladies and gents :(

What the hell is a “NY SPECIAL TAX” ????? what makes that tax so “special” ??? I’ve never heard of such thing, is this just another way for the government to take even more money from its citizens? Can someone from NY explain what the hell a “special tax” is and why they deemed it necessary to take that 0.75 from me?

When you pay sales tax, it is often actually comprised of a base state tax, plus local/district add-on taxes. Normally you just see the combined tax rate listed. In this case the combined rate looks to be 8.88% which is a little higher than the national average, but not significantly so.

I'm not a New Yorker, but a minute of googling tells me that this is the "Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge" of 0.375%. It's been a thing for nearly 15 years and on most receipts is just rolled into a single line item of NY sales tax that combines the state, city, and transportation taxes.

So I recently found out during my recent purchase that the website charged me both New York State&City taxes. The items I bouthgt was under $110 per item.Then I contated the help support and they kindly assist me return the tax that was added in my purchase. I dont know if this is a bug on their website...its wild to me just think about if I dont reach out...
Thought it’s worth to post on here so that more people knows and hopefully they would fix the bug...

They've had this issue for MONTHS. Like as far as I've been orderinng from them.... So this has made me skeptical of how much they're really trying to "fix it". If it's really a bug, how could it be taking at least this entire year to fix it?

I had no idea, and I’ve had so many orders with them… I double checked with other clothing orders and they definitely do not charge you tax EDIT: I went through all of my purchases (since 2021) and I’ve been charged $607 in taxes. Going to attempt to ask for a refund because that’s a lot of money…
