How to get hired by a startup in NYC?
I really, really, really want to help build a company up from the early stages My biggest piece of advice--which you may already be doing!--is to make sure that you apply to tech companies at all lifecycle stages, not just the earliest. Early stage companies--at least the good ones, which is where you want to be going--need to be hiring reliable talent. From a resume perspective, that isn't you (which is ok!). Your better odds are going to be finding some later-stage tech company which needs to fill a lot of seats and which has the capacity (due to law of large numbers) to take some risk on an individual level. Once you get a later-stage logo on your resume ("Snowflake", or whatever), regardless of the role, you'll find it much easier to get traction. (Now, I'm not saying don't apply for early-stage companies, nor am I saying to decline any such offers; rather, I'm just trying to help you understand where to place your bets.) More on reddit.com

r/startups on Reddit: How to get hired by a startup in NYC?
May 3, 2023 -

For context: I have a BA in English Literature, graduated in spring 2018, and an MAT in English Secondary Education (grades 7-12), graduated in spring 2021. I realized halfway through my Master’s degree that teaching was a poor match for me (lack of control over lesson planning, choosing what’s right for the kids, etc.). After being a permanent substitute for nearly two years, I left the job in January 2022, and I applied like mad to every startup job/internship. I got an offer this past April to work as a Talent Sourcer/Jr. Recruiter for an agency in NYC. The job sucks, but I’m grateful to be working after looking for employment for so long. Plus, it’s something to put on my resume. I took the job to hopefully pivot into an HR-centered role, and so here I am applying for such jobs in NYC and the outskirts (some remote). I really, really, really want to help build a company up from the early stages. I’m an incredibly hard worker and often perceive things differently than others, always proposing new solutions/ideas to problems and brainstorming. It’s so hard in NYC, especially when I’m doing it without any connections or networking channels. If anyone can offer any helpful advice, I would appreciate it.

Start going to events in your preferred industry or niche to grow your network and (probably) get out of your comfort zone. At the same time, have a presentable LinkedIn account (if that's a thing in nyc). Follow interesting people there and connect with those you met at events. Then try to look for people with a similar non-linear background in hr roles in start ups you find interesting and connect with them and make sure to write a nice connection request. This is what I was doing and it worked well for me but I also have a more linear background.
