I'm looking to do something similar. My idea was to actually DIY a tabletop that would fit with the "underbox" in the same way they upper cushioned part does. The idea is to have that tabletop hidden behind the sofa, and take it out only in the rare ocassion I need a table instead of a footstool. However, I may like this idea even more. I would get a cheap tufted ottoman. Amazon has a bunch. It won’t be super stylish, but it’s a temporary fix that will provide a little extra storage, and it won’t have hard corners or anything that could hurt the less coordinated members of your household.
