Etsy is no longer required to be handmade. Once they opened up to “supplies” the mass produced stuff started coming in. Generally, the cheap quilts are either mass produced, by makers who are severely undercutting prices to make a sale, makers who are very new and don’t understand that they should be charging appropriately for their time & materials, or seasoned makers who are selling cheap to make space for more. Materials alone for a decent sized quilt are going to be at least $200 -$300 so if you’re seeing stuff priced there or lower, they are charging enough. Expect to pay hundreds to a few thousand dollars for a well made, appropriately priced quilt. Think Amish quilt prices - the Amish are the only group I see consistently charging close to their worth. That said, even they provably aren’t charging enough given that they are made by hand or minimal use of sewing machines (think treadle) That said you can find legit quilters on Etsy, and Instagram - if you follow fabric designers and quilters on social media you can get to know who some of the pros are, from there you can find destashes, folks selling their own quilts and quilts being auctioned or sold to raise money. If you can find a quilt at a thrift store they’re normally the sort of heirloom quilts that used to be passed down for generations, but nowadays get donated when g-ma passes on. Will last for a long time and normally do just fine in the regular wash as well. More on reddit.com
