PCA chooses orthogonal vectors iteratively to explain most of the variance with the first few of them. ICA on the other hand does not have the orthogonality constraint of PCA but wants to emphasize statistical independence between components. Here is a complete study with 2D and 3D plots to illustrate a canonical example that emphasizes the difference: Identifying relevant variables: PCA and ICA

One is not a generalization of the other, but they are related in spirit. Both take advantage of the statistical properties of the data to find a "better" space to represent the data in. PCA finds uncorrelated dimensions (which can be done using either the eigenvectors of the covariance matrix or the singular value decomposition of the data). The covariance matrix of the PCA-projected data vectors is the identity matrix, meaning that each of the new dimensions is uncorrelated with each other new dimension. ICA, true to its name, attempts to find dimensions that are totally statistically independent. Statistical independence of the dimensions implies that all the cross moments are zero, which includes the second moment, or covariance. Because this is more restrictive, the components will not necessarily be orthogonal. Another helpful way of thinking about the difference between PCA and ICA is in the distribution of the data along the new dimensions that each aims for (this is mentioned briefly at the end of @orgisel's link). While PCA aims for distributions that are as Gaussian as possible, ICA aims for distributions that are as far from Gaussian as possible, i.e. long tails and sharp peaks. These two perspectives are related by the fact that, of all distributions possible, the Gaussian distribution has the highest variance relative to its other moments. If you're willing to tolerate a bit of hand-waving, this sort of means that a Gaussian distribution is "good" at capturing variance but "bad" at capturing higher moments (skew, kurtosis, etc.). So, if your model aims to capture covariance between dimensions (resulting in uncorrelated dimensions), you should shoot for Gaussian distributions. Conversely, non-Gaussian distributions are "good" at capturing higher moments, and so if your model is aiming to capture and remove higher moments (resulting in totally independent components) then you should aim for distributions that are as un-Gaussian as possible. Sorry all for playing a little fast-and-loose with some definitions, but hopefully this helps with some of the intuitions behind these methods.

Fusion of PCA and ICA in Statistical Subset Analysis for Speech Emotion Recognition - PMC
In this work, PCA and ICA were selected, as PCA is often used without prior feature selection, thus disregarding the data distribution, while ICA is a non-parametric method that is recommended when the data are not normally distributed [23].

January 22, 2025 - The results of LDA can be interpreted as a projection of the data onto a space that maximizes class separation, whereas the results of PCA and ICA can be interpreted as a projection of the data onto a space that captures the most important sources of variability or independence, respectively.

Answer (1 of 2): Both PCA and ICA try to find a set of vectors, a basis, for the data. So you can write any point (vector) in your data as a linear combination of the basis. In PCA the basis you want to find is the one that best explains the variability of your data. The first vector of the PCA ...

February 13, 2023 - As a result of these differences, ICA is typically used when the underlying structure of the data is non-Gaussian and the sources are assumed to be independent, while PCA is used when the data is Gaussian or when the goal is to reduce the dimensionality of the data while preserving the variance.

A Basic Comparison Between Factor Analysis, PCA, and ICA | Daniel Roelfs
September 14, 2021 - A nice feature of PCA is that the underlying principles are rather simple, and you could calculate the eigenvectors and eigenvalues using just two functions: cov() and eigen(), which calculate the covariance matrix and the eigenvalues and -vectors of the covariance matrix respectively. If the terms “matrix manipulations”, eigenvectors, and dot product sound scary to you, you can skip to the ICA section.
