Physical Space - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
For each entity, the virtual space builds a three-dimension digital mirror model, which is similar to the physical counterpart not only in geometric appearance, but also in physical properties and behaviors. With virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), the virtual space becomes immersive, which means it can simulate the physical space through senses and perception, thus realizing full body immersion.

Answer (1 of 2): The term “space” has a special very general meaning in math and physics. Space is just a manifold of any number of dimensions. A plane is a 2 dimensional space.

r/explainlikeimfive on Reddit: ELI5: Is space a physical object?
March 24, 2023 -

A recent post on here got me thinking about the physical nature of space. When I say space I mean the “fabric” of the universe. For example, if space is expanding (ex: galaxies moving further apart from each other) then that means space, or the thing that the universe exists within, is a physical object, right? If so, do we know what it is, what it’s made of? And if it is a physical object that is somehow getting larger, what is it expanding into?

This is probably too heavy on semantics, bordering on philosophy, to properly discuss. What do you mean by "physical"? Made of matter? No. Would you describe light as physical? We do interact with it all the time, it can even push stuff. So is "physical" "existing and we can interact with it"? And frankly, does it even matter? We can agree that space-time exists, and it has a real influence on us (which we feel as gravity). Further, empty space isn't empty, because quantum fields have a value at every point in space. And we constantly interact with one of those fields, that's how matter has mass. That's what space IS. Whether you'd CLASSIFY that as "a physical object" frankly seems completely irrelevant. It will exist as is regardless. As for what it's expanding "into"... Something, nothing or "itself". It might be sn ultimately unanswerable question, because we can't measure something outside of our literal existence, which is within space-time. We can't see past it or "outside" of it. Or even tell if it's finite or infinite.

The name you are looking for here is "Aether". The theory was that space itself was composed of an element called aether that permiated everything. When it was disproven this resulted in the discovery of general relativity. Space itself is not a physical material since it behaves exactly the same no matter how fast you are going. If you are going close to the speed of light then space is also moving close to the speed of light with you and when you are stationary space is also stationary. This can not be if space is a physical object. You can think of space as a set of fixed points. They are not moving anywhere so space is not growing externally. However the distance between these fixed points in space does grow bigger. So the internal volume of space is growing, even though the "external volume" stay the same.
