First, a small vent. I think it’s ridiculous that postal code datasets are proprietary. This should be open data, like every other administrative boundary in the country. Canada Post trying to turn a profit is gross. It straddles a strange line between a crown corporation and a private organization…
Secondly, I’m curious how y’all get your postal code datasets? I work for a small municipality. We currently have a pretty convoluted workflow that takes a land ownership table, cross-references the owner’s full address with the parcel address to extract the postal code to the parcel, remove outliers like owners who don’t live in their house, dissolve the parcel boundaries together where the code matches…There must be a better way?
As I understand it, the postal code lookup website also has functions to block you from simply running a script to scrape their data en masse, so I know that’s not an option…

Oh god so I'm not the only one struggling with this. I also work for a municipality, right now we are just pulling assessment parcels matched with postal codes in AMANDA and just joining them. It's fucking ugly and terrible but the only other thing would be to pay for it (Like Environics). I get asked for this pull every now and then from our Economic Development department and I don't know if they just forget what I said last month but it's frustrating to constantly tell them NO

We buy the Postal Code polygon boundaries for our municipality from Environics (quarterly deliveries) and intersect our address points with them. As a proof of concept, we also paid Canada Post for their AddressComplete API and query addresses that way, but I’ve found it to be very hit or miss and the rules I’ve had to write are getting complicated. We were hoping this would fill the gap between the quarterly polygon downloads, but it hasn’t been worth it.
