r/animationcareer on Reddit: No online degrees at Pratt, CalArts and SVA?
July 2, 2021 -

I'm just wondering why is it that Those three don't have any online degree options for people? They have online options in their continuing education department but no online BFA or MFA options. Now SCAD and Full Sail however do which I say good for them. I just don't understand why especially since online learning is booming now, that they haven't jumped on the band wagon. Any thoughts? Any idea if they will develop an online learning program?

Honestly, it’s partially a sense of elitism, the feeling that an online program would diminish their program’s prestige (this is especially in the case of CalArts, that generally only accepts 70 new students into their character animation program a year). As well as simply that some of these programs have no online resources ,outside of Zoom, set up. It would be extremely costly to build an accompanying online program from the ground up. A lot have struggled just adapting to an online format during the pandemic, much less a permanent digital format. Additionally, many of the amenities these programs offer aren’t easily available to online students, and these programs have a heavily interactive and collaborative hands on atmosphere with their students as well. Lastly, most of the faculty at these institutes are working professionals, they’re not full time teachers. They teach one or a few nights a week or on weekends, and can’t incorporate another class into their already hectic schedules. That being said, there’s many great online programs out there from both accredited and independent sources. I just wouldn’t hold my breath for the schools you mentioned to offer any themselves anytime soon.

I graduated from SVA with a BFA in Illo. I don't think it's about keeping the "prestige". When I went to school and worked part time from my second the half of my 4th year it was like going to two schools (one art one humanities) and I had a part time job and I was pulling all nighters every other weekend especially during midterms/finals and during my 3rd and 4th year the workload was a lot and I was physically there. Trust me, if SVA was able to figure out how to streamline a BFA in Animation, Illustration or Cartooning they would had done it years ago. Anyone I knew who had taken an online school that focused on the arts either paused their education, stopped, or dropped out due to the heavy course load. I rarely met anyone who completed their schooling or enjoyed it as in satisfaction but more like--"meh". But hey, if it's to get that paper by any means necessary people will do it. If you're someone who doesn't need to be hand hold and can research supplemental info to add to your online learning it might work for you. However, if you have never worked in that type of environment during your mandatory schooling, you needed an IEP, extra help, have terrible time management skills, you become overwhelmed easily, you should think about it carefully. Physical schooling gives you more resources in combating that. Online schooling you're on your own. And if you get behind it's harder to catch up. And let's be honest there are students who live in toxic households or reside in communities where the probability of upward mobility depends on them leaving unfortunately. Aside from the Military for most going to college or university is their entry way into a stable or safe life. A Continuing Education program is similar to the online Classes you get from Rad How To School or Animation Mentor. You don't have to worry about credits and it's a more relaxed atmosphere and it's mostly working professionals who or already have experience in the industry. Most incoming Freshman and Sophomores are either not professionals, do not have working experience (not just in the industry but job experience with other ppl outside the industry) or honestly the maturity/life experience yet.
