October 8, 2012 - Because the Prime Meridian is a sort of cartographic and temporal center line. It's convenient and prestigious to have it in your country, and the Brits (who codified the final version of the whole thing) wanted it in theirs. The international date line, on the other hand, is inconvenient to have around because you have to spend more effort keeping track of days.

ELI5: Why the International Date Line is placed where it is, instead of anywhere else.
It's kind of a useful coincidence that it's in the middle of the Pacific where there is not much land. The reason it's there is because it's the opposite side of the world to the Prime meridian. And the Prime meridian is where it is because the system was invented by the British, so they put it straight through London. The exact international date line isn't entirely straight though. There are some countries in the Pacific which have chosen to have their time zones on the other side of it, so the dateline sort of "wiggles" around those countries. More on reddit.com

The location of the prime meridian and the time zones demonstrate that even the most straightforward mathematical and scientific systems of classification and measurement are not immune to political arguments and boundaries. The designation of a line of longitude as the prime meridian (0º) is arbitrary, unlike the degrees of the parallels of latitude that have their zero degree line along the equator, an actual physical feature.
