About — The Public Domain Review
Every two weeks we publish a new long-form essay in which leading scholars, writers, archivists, and artists offer insight and reflection upon the oft overlooked histories which surround public domain works — from Pre-Raphaelite wombats to new balloon-born perspectives. Contributors include Philip Pullman, Paula Findlen, and Julian Barnes. ... The vast majority of the content exists in our curated collections of images, books, audio and film, in which we shine a light on curiosities and wonders from a wide range of online archives.

Gathering a remarkable collection of over 500 artworks, Affinities is a carefully curated visual journey illuminating connections across more than two thousand years of image making. Drawing on a decade of archival exploration at The Public Domain Review, the book brings together works from a wide array of sources — from manuscripts to ship logs to primers on Victorian magic — and casts them into a single captivating sequence. The result is a dreamlike tour through the stranger corners of art history: a unique celebration of the ways in which images speak to each other and to us.

r/selfpublish on Reddit: public domain and reviews
December 2, 2023 -
Hello,
I just published a public domain book on amazon kdp. Since then I have come across information that reviews will automatically get added into your book version. Can you explain how this happens? Thank you

Unless something has changed, Amazon merges all reviews for a given PD work together, and they appear on each listing. That means that, if you’ve published a common one, you will eventually find many bad reviews. That’s because there have been a great many hastily thrown together PD works on the platform, and the reviews reflect that. In other words, if you were to publish an edition of Dracula today, you’ll find thousands of reviews on your book’s page that complain of quality issues from other editions that predate yours, and will continue to populate from editions of the same book that follow. This makes it tough to find much success publishing public domain works via KDP. Probably partly by design, as it effectively shunts them off into a nether realm to struggle together.

It’s public domain. Not your book, not your sales page, not your reviews.
