Stacks with Python
Since Python lists has good support for functionality needed to implement stacks, we start with creating a stack and do stack operations with just a few lines like this: ... stack = [] # Push stack.append('A') stack.append('B') stack.append('C') print("Stack: ", stack) # Peek topElement = stack[-1] print("Peek: ", topElement) # Pop poppedElement = stack.pop() print("Pop: ", poppedElement) # Stack after Pop print("Stack after Pop: ", stack) # isEmpty isEmpty = not bool(stack) print("isEmpty: ", isEmpty) # Size print("Size: ",len(stack)) Try it Yourself »

A Complete Guide to Stacks in Python | Built In
April 9, 2025 - Python does not have a built-in stack() function, but stacks can be implemented using lists, collections.deque, or queue.LifoQueue. These implementations provide the necessary stack functionalities such as push, pop and peek.

May 8, 2023 - In Python, the peek operation can be performed by accessing the first item of the list that represents a stack. For example, let's consider the following stack. We'll just go ahead and say stack is equal to 1, 2, 3 and 4. Now let's go ahead ...

Exploring Stacks with Python Lists
For example, to verify if a stack is empty, we can use the len() function. If it returns 0, that means the stack is empty. Conversely, if it returns a nonzero value, we can infer the stack is not empty. To peek at the top element of the stack without popping it, merely indexing with -1 is handy.

r/learnpython on Reddit: creating a 'peek' function for a stack
November 5, 2015 -

I have made a module that defines how to create a stack, and I have another that imports it to make the stack. For basic purposes I have used a range of (1,10).

My output is currently

pushing 1 on to stack// pushing 2 on to stack//...etc popping 9 off of stack// popping 8 off of stack//...etc

what I want is to create a function that will stop this right before it starts popping to allow the user to enter a number, and see in it is in the stack. And then for the program to pop the rest off when the user is done.

How to peek the top value of a stack in queue.LifoQueue() in Python - Quora
Answer: The reason there’s no method to do so is because “peek” is not well-defined on a concurrent stack like that provided by
queue.LifoQueue
. Even the
full
and
empty
methods are documented as “will probably be removed at some point” because ...

Stack in Python: How To Implement Python Stack?
October 24, 2024 - The items in a list are stored one after the other inside the memory. Hence, if the stack grows bigger than the block of memory allocated to the list, Python needs to do some new memory allocations, resulting in some append() taking much longer than the rest while calling.
