July 26, 2024Buying advice: used/refurbished workstation
Probably what is going to matter most is what is local to you. I recently did a detailed investigation into 2nd hand mobile workstations so I can provide more thoughts on that if that is what you are in the market for but my methodology can be applied to any requirements comparison. I started making a list and then tabulated their performance by what mattered to me. That is, number of cores, single/multi CPU benchmark, GPU benchmark and memory bandwidth. I scaled them by dividing by the highest score that way the fastest is 1.0 and everything else is like 0.47 as fast as the fastest. I then summed the scores to rank overall best and then plotted them against cost from the zero cost option of my current computer to the fastest and most expensive and found a cluster of computers at 0.80 performance at half the cost of the fastest! As a general rule, I have found good value and noticeable uplift in 2-4 x times my current computer’s performance at the same time the bleeding edge is like 10 times performance and 3 times the cost and in 5 years time when I next buy it will be the same cost. We watch ebay for most of our shop test systems. We’ve grabbed a few 7810’s and 5810’s with way more memory than we’d ever need for a few hundred bucks. Sadly they lack NVMe but with a boss card they still perform quite well. Good enough for general purpose VM test rigs. Otherwise, 3620/3630 are relatively inexpensive as well and support one NVMe. I don’t recall if the 3650 has dual NVMe or not, 3660’s do but their the current model so you’ll pay a premium. More on reddit.com

How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, looking for something easy to carry around my university.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 inches or smaller
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't do any intensive gaming or programming at all. I just need something that I can use to browse the internet with multiple tabs open and won't cause the laptop to heat up.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would prefer something with a matte screen. Touchscreen and fingerprint readers are a must.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are and beneficial to the discussion. From what I've heard, business laptops like HP elitebooks, Thinkpads, and Dell Latitudes tend to be a good bet in terms of quality. I'm not particularly tech savvy, so I'm not sure what sort of processor to look for. A lot of refurbished models on ebay have Intel i5 and i7 8th, 9th, and 10th gen processors. Not sure which of these would still hold up in 2024.

I got my refurbished laptop from this store on eBay https://ebay.us/Jpwgit for under $400, and honestly, it’s been ok. It handles my day to day stuff without any issues. Battery life is good too. Mine came with an Intel i5 (8th gen) processor, and it’s still running just fine in 2024. I think it's worth checking out refurbished options on eBay, as long as you go with a trusted seller. #ad
