Thoughts on Samsung Galaxy Watch
Owned a Gear S3, traded in for a Polar M600 and settled on my current Huawei Watch 2 Classic. Picked up a Galaxy Watch 46mm on launch at Best Buy (ironically before people got their actual preorders from Samsung.com) to test it out during their 14 day return period.
I'll preface this by saying that this was just my particular use case and if you're not using it for fitness tracking it still might work for you.
The hardware on the GW is fucking amazing. Every edge felt well thought out and the rotating bezel is so satisfying to use. An actual modern SOC packing a 400+mah battery with the best in class display? Hell yeah. And then you actually use the watch and you start noticing all the holes in the ship.
SHealth still has issues with GPS tracking that is well documented all the way back to the Gear S3. It's a software issue that lowers the polling rate of the GPS radios in an attempt to save battery and if you're primarily running in a straight line you won't notice it too much. But if you run like a normal person, with turns, then the watch will consistently cut corners. If you pause your run at an intersection the aggressive battery management kicks in again and you lose GPS. Once you hit start again you have to reacquire satellites... The pace and speed information was never accurate during the run but would appear fine on SHealth on the phone when I returned home.
Bixby is just svoice in disguise and it is absolute aids to use. Nothing more needs to be said about it. No Google Assistant.
Tizen store has a million watchfaces but they're all paid. And despite the million watchfaces there still isn't a watchface like "Portions" that displays your fitness stats as well as THE WEATHER. You could build one like I did on Watchmaker but that was a $6 paid app and then another $4 to get the basic premium watchfaces. Oh, and no refunds so you can't try anything out.
But the battery will be it's saving grace right? Not if you use the watch like I did. I left all of the smart features of my smartwatch on, because I paid for them. AOD on, wifi on, HR monitoring on, sleep tracking etc. This is the same way I use my WearOS watch. The 46mm version lasted me 2 full days including sleep tracking. MY HW2C lasts just over a full day. The battery increase isn't enough to change my charging habits, I just go longer in between feeling like I have to charge my watch.
