Not sure about this, but I think I remember Smart Switch has a built-in functionality to let you make a backup from a Samsung phone where screen is broken, just like third-party tools like Wondershare etc., so maybe you could just close "Dex for Desktop" on your Windows and connect phone to computer with cable and see if such a functionality is in Smart Switch More on reddit.com

Make sure you have Smart Switch on both devices. On newer devices, you will find it at Settings > Cloud and accounts > Smart Switch. On older ones, you may need to download it from the Play Store
STEP 2
Connect your devices. Make sure your devices are close together and that you have a stable internet connection.
STEP 3
Open Smart Switch on your new device and tap Start , then follow the onscreen instructions.
You will have the option to choose which data you wish to transfer. While it is transferring, you will see a percentage on the screen letting you know how far through it is. The time taken will depend on the amount of data and the strength of your connection.

Hi guys, I will be getting the S22 Ultra in a few days and plan to use smart switch to transfer stuff over to new phone.
My old phone’s screen is destroyed like I can‘t see anything on the screen but still can interact by guessing where say buttons are. So I will be planning on using smart switch on Windows to back up my files then transfer stuff over to the new phone. So far the only way to use my current phone is with Dex and Dex does not allow smart switch to be used.
My question is - this should work right?
And doing it through Windows like this should have the same result as using smart switch directly from both phones?

Only thing you can do is try. SmartSwitch on Windows only requires the device be unlocked before it has access. Since you can acces Dex, I am assuming you do not have lockscreen set up. If that all hold s true, I think you are good to go.

I would open Smart Switch again, and the same issue would occur so I couldn't use the application because it tried to updated each time I opened it and then it would close automatically. I downloaded and installed the new version of Smart Switch from the Samsung website over the top of the existing installation on Windows 10 1909, and now it's working without any issues.
